A neurofibromatose tipo I (doença cutânea de Von Recklinghausen) é uma doença hereditária determinada por um gene dominante com estimativa de ocorrência de 1 para cada 3000 nascimentos. Caracteriza-se pela presença de múltiplos tumores nervosos (neurofibromas) em diversas regiões do corpo.Pode apresentar também manchas pigmentadas na pele, com coloração café com leite, problemas esqueléticos, mentais, oculares e defeitos congênitos.Cerca de 38% dos casos de neurofibromatose apresentam tumores em mucosa bucal, sendo os sítios mais freqüentes os lábios e a mucosa jugal.
