Introdução: A prevenção de doenças orais está intimamente relacionada à higienização oral, na qual o fio dental é considerado um meio mecânico para remoção do biofilme dentário das superfícies interproximais dos dentes. No entanto, a frequência de utilização do fio dental é baixa na população em geral. Objetivo: Buscar na literatura evidências científicas sobre o efeito do uso do fio dental no controle de biofilme dentário e inflamação gengival. Métodos: Para a seleção das referências foram utilizadas as bases SCIELO, LILACS e PUBMED, sendo que a seleção dos artigos foi limitada a língua inglesa e ao período entre 1970 a 2018. Resultados: Observou-se que há poucas evidências científicas que embasam que o uso do fio dental está relacionado à redução do biofilme dentário e ao sangramento gengival. Considerações finais: Torna-se necessário realizar novos estudos clínicos controlados randomizados delineados para avaliar especificamente o efeito do uso do fio dental em diferentes situações clínicas. Apesar disso, conclui-se que o fio dental é um complemento importante para escovação, visto que os benefícios superam quaisquer danos potenciais.
