La identidad sociocultural depende en gran medida de las formas de comunicación dentro de las comunidades. En este artículo se presenta un análisis de las herramientas de comunicación alternativa que promueven la participación ciudadana y apuestan por la justicia social y el empoderamiento de las comunidades. Con un estudio de caso y un análisis de contenidos desarrollado en la comunidad menonita de Chihuahua, México, se ejemplifica el papel que ha jugado la comunicación alternativa en las últimas décadas y se resalta la importancia de su estudio para reconocer los ejes de acción que permiten la conservación de las identidades culturales en grupos minoritarios.
