Recebido para publicação em: 08/09/2011 Aceito para publicação em: 22/11/2011 RESUMOComo a assistência odontológica ainda hoje é muito direcionada à faixa etária escolar, deixando milhões de indivíduos adultos desassistidos de políticas e planejamentos específi cos, este trabalho tem por objetivo descrever a saúde bucal e o perfi l socioeconômico da população adulta (18-60 anos) residente no Bairro Figueirinha no município de Xangri-Lá, RS. Trata-se de um estudo longitudinal observacional, com uma amostra composta de 250 pessoas cadastradas na ESF da UBS Figueirinha do município de Xangri-Lá, RS. Do total da amostra, 38.6% foi composta por homens com uma média de idade de 37.7 anos e 61.3% de mulheres com idade média de 39.5 anos, dos quais 82% não completaram o Ensino Fundamental, com uma média de 10% de analfabetos. Tem-se ainda que 59.5% relataram possuir uma renda de um a dois salários mínimos. Da observação efetuada, pôde-se constatar que 94.3%, não apresentaram lesão em tecidos moles; placa visível foi encontrada em 62.6%, e o sangramento gengival ocorreu em 56%. A frequência de escovação dentária relatada foi de 60% de duas a três vezes ao dia, sendo que 74,78% relataram não haver recebido orientação para fazê-la. O edentulismo estava presente em 13.4%, e a média de dentes perdidos foi de nove por pessoa. 53.9% apresentaram cáries, em uma média de dois dentes cariados por indivíduo. Através deste levantamento foi possível identifi car um perfi l carente de saúde bucal aliado ao de nível socioeconômico da população adulta, jovem e madura, dos moradores do bairro Figueirinha, ou seja, os altos índices de problemas de placa visível, sangramento gengival, cárie e perdas dentárias apresentam-se na população de baixa remuneração e escolaridade, alvo desta pesquisa. Results: Of the total sample, 38.6% are men with a mean age of 37.7 years and 61.3% are women with a mean age of 39.5 years. 94.3% had no lesions in soft tissues. Visible plaque was found in 62.6% and gingival bleeding occurred in 56%. The reported frequency of toothbrushing was 2 to 3 times a day by 60% of the sample, and 74.78% reported that they have never received oral hygiene education. Edentulism was present in 13.4% of the sample, and the mean loss is of 9 teeth per person. 53.9% were caries, in a mean of two decayed teeth per person. 82% had not completed primary education and 10% are illiterate. 59.5% reported having an income of one to two minimum wages. Conclusion: Through this survey it was possible to identify a profi le of poor oral health and socioeconomic status of the young and mature adult population resident in the Figueirinha neighborhood: low income and education level, with high levels of visible plaque, bleeding gums, tooth decay and tooth loss.
