Transcutaneous and epidural electrical spinal cord stimulation techniques are becoming more valuable as electrophysiological and clinical tools. Recently, we observed selective activation of proximal and distal motor pools during epidural spinal stimulation. In the present study, we hypothesized that the characteristics of recruitment curves obtained from leg muscles will reflect a relative preferential activation of proximal and distal motor pools based on their arrangement along the lumbosacral enlargement. The purpose was to describe the electrophysiological responses to transcutaneous stimulation in leg muscles innervated by motoneurons from different segmental levels. Stimulation delivered along the rostrocaudal axis of the lumbosacral enlargement in the supine position resulted in a selective topographical recruitment of proximal and distal leg muscles, as described by threshold intensity, slope of the recruitment curves, and plateau point intensity and magnitude. Relatively selective recruitment of proximal and distal motor pools can be titrated by optimizing the site and intensity level of stimulation to excite a given combination of motor pools. The slope of the recruitment of particular muscles allows characterization of the properties of afferents projecting to specific motoneuron pools, as well as to the type and size of the motoneurons. The location and intensity of transcutaneous spinal electrical stimulation are critical to target particular neural structures across different motor pools in investigation of specific neuromodulatory effects. Finally, the asymmetry in bilateral evoked potentials is inevitable and can be attributed to both anatomical and functional peculiarities of individual muscles or muscle groups.

1. We analyzed the activity of single neurons in gustatory cortex of alert cynomolgus monkeys in response to a range of stimulus intensities. Chemicals were deionized water, fruit juice, and several concentrations of the four prototypical taste stimuli: 10(-3)-1.0 M glucose, 10(-3)-1.0 M NaCl, 10(-4)-3 x 10(-2) M HCl, and 10(-5)-3 x 10(-3) M quinine HCl. 2. Taste-evoked responses could be recorded from a cortical gustatory area that measured 2.5 mm in its anteroposterior extent, 6.0 mm dorsoventrally, and 3.0 mm mediolaterally. Taste-responsive cells constituted 62 (3.7%) of the 1,661 neurons tested. Nongustatory cells gave responses associated with mouth movement (10.1%), somatosensory stimulation (2.2%), and approach or anticipation (0.9%). 3. Intensity-response functions were determined across 62 gustatory neurons. Neural thresholds for each stimulus quality conformed well to human psychophysical thresholds. Mean discharge rate was a direct function of stimulus concentration for glucose, NaCl, and quinine HCl. The most effective of the basic stimuli was glucose. 4. Power function exponents were calculated from the responses of neural subgroups most responsive to each basic stimulus. Those for glucose, NaCl, and quinine were within the range of psychophysically derived values. Thus the perceived intensity of each basic quality is presumably based on the activity of the appropriate neural subgroup rather than on the mean activity of all taste cells. 5. The mean breadth-of-tuning (entropy) coefficient for 62 gustatory neurons was 0.65 (range, 0.00-0.98). 6. There was no clear evidence of chemotopic organization in the gustatory cortex. 7. An analysis of taste quality indicated that sweet stimuli evoked patterns of activity that were clearly distinct from those of the nonsweet chemicals. Among the latter group, NaCl was differentiable from HCl and quinine HCl, whose patterns were closely related. 8. The response characteristics of cortical taste cells imply gustatory thresholds and intensity-response functions for the nonhuman primate that conform well to those reported in psychophysical studies of humans, reinforcing the value of this neural model for human taste intensity perception.

A cementitious backfill has been proposed in many geological disposal concepts for intermediate-level waste and low-level waste in the UK and elsewhere. In this paper, the main features of the chemical evolution of backfill and the associated changes in the near-field pH are illustrated with results from recent work. For example, interaction of the groundwater with calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases in a backfill is expected to play an important role in the long-term pH-buffering behaviour. Existing experimental data for the dissolution of C-S-H gels are compared with recent experimental results from leach tests on gels of a lower calcium to silicon ratio (C/S) to provide a consistent set of data across the full C/S range. The results confirm that a congruent dissolution point around C/S = 0.8 is approached by leaching from below (i.e. for gels with 0.29 < C/S < 0.8), as well as from above, as reported elsewhere. In addition, a spreadsheet model has been developed to calculate the volume of backfill required at the vault scale to meet specified pH performance criteria. This model includes the major reactions of the backfill with the groundwater, waste encapsulants and waste components. It can also consider the effects of specific waste packages on local pH performance to allow comparison with the vault-scale calculations.

SAR 1118 Ophthalmic Solution appears safe and well-tolerated up to 5.0% TID in healthy adult subjects. PK analysis shows adequate ocular exposure with minimal systemic exposure.

In this study, we develop a model discrete fracture network (DFN) for the unconventional, naturally fractured Tensleep Sandstone oil reservoir at Teapot Dome, Wyoming. Reservoir characterization is based on three-dimensional (3D) seismic data, fracture image logs from Teapot Dome, and field observations of the Tensleep exposure in the Alcova anticline and Fremont Canyon areas. Image logs reveal that the dominant reservoir fracture set trends parallel to the present-day maximum horizontal compressive stress (S Hmax ) inferred from drilling induced fractures. Analog field studies of the Alcova anticline and Fremont Canyon suggest fracture heights and lengths are power-law distributed, while the fracture spacing distribution is best described as log-normal. Image-log-derived fracture apertures are also log-normally distributed. These properties are incorporated into a model DFN. We assume subseismic folds, faults, and fracture zones control fracture intensity distribution and use composite 3D seismic attributes to locate subtle changes in seismic response interpreted to result from subseismic structure. Directional curvature defines aperture-opening strain normal to the dominant reservoir fracture set. Seismic attributes are scaled and combined to control fracture intensity variations in the model. Grid-cell porosity and permeability distributions derived from the DFN suggest the presence of northeast-southwest-trending reservoir compartments. We suggest
