Valérie BonnetRugby, médias et territoire Le rugby, en raison d'une implantation principalement rurale, est un sport fortement ancré dans un territoire, phénomène perceptible tant au plan local que planétaire. Il fait en effet s'affronter, dans une compétition internationale, des nations qui ne correspondent pas à des territoires étatiques (Pays de Galles, Écosse). Par ailleurs, il connait une distribution géographique spécifique -zone océanique de l'hémisphère sud, Afrique du Sud, iles Britanniques, sud de la France -liée, entre autres raisons, à l'essaimage culturel de sa patrie d'origine : l'Angleterre 1 .Ce fait ne manque pas de frapper les esprits et marque de son empreinte les discours portés sur cette pratique sportive : le discours rugbystique, qu'il s'agisse de celui de l'amateur, du joueur ou du professionnel de ce sport, possède une part active dans le maintien d'une identité collective générée par le rappel incessant de l'implantation territoriale.C'est le discours des commentaires des retransmissions télévisées que cet article se propose d'analyser, afin de déceler les outils dont se sont dotés les médias pour relayer et maintenir cette identité territorialisée malgré l'évolution de la société et de la discipline.Pour cela, nous nous intéresserons aux rencontres nationales et internationales de 1961 à 1999 2 , en privilégiant deux périodes : les années soixante, puis les dix années encadrant la professionnalisation de la discipline, survenue en 1995, ces deux éléments de corpus permettant une comparaison diachronique.
