Purpose This paper aims to examine how new educational approaches to the presentation of electronic information resources can influence interest in their use among first-year undergraduates. Despite the variety of technological facilities available in universities, the learning process sometimes fails to keep pace with their advantages. Universities are investing in high-technology classrooms and an extensive multidisciplinary subscription to e-resources in the belief that students will make use of these opportunities. However, students often ignore the availability of relevant and verified content and prefer to retrieve information from Google’s search results. The absence of students’ initial motivation to work with a complex product is perhaps the greatest challenge faced by the teacher-librarian. Limited time available for training (a lecture and a seminar) and lack of preparedness among information specialists aggravates the situation. Design/methodology/approach The efficacy of new educational approaches to the presentation of e-resources was examined in a pilot study involving 940 first-year undergraduates at the North-West Institute of Management of the Presidential Academy (RANEPA). The authors replaced academic lectures with flexible and interesting techniques based on student’s interests, used attention triggers for each e-resource in lecture materials and focused the seminar on multiple specific searches to attract and keep students engaged. New educational approaches were implemented in four-hour sessions for first-year students in all disciplines. Findings The results suggest that the new educational approaches and teaching techniques can raise the level of students’ involvement and interest in the use of subscribed e-resources. To assess the developed approach, the authors analyzed the dynamics of the students’ visits to subscribed resources and observed a significant increase in the number of visits. The authors found such a trend for all the types of requests and resources. Overall, the number of visits and full-text requests increased from 88 to 284 per cent for the 2017-2018 academic year compared to the 2016-2017 one. Practical implications The findings of the study demonstrate the necessity of applying new educational approaches to teaching students who lack the motivation to use high-quality electronic resources. The teacher-librarian can be an important link between scientific information and consumers. The newly developed techniques have great potential for a wide range of educational applications including the development of teaching materials and training programs. Social implications The approach combines teaching methodology with rich informational environment, enhancing students’ motivation to information literacy through mastering their digital skills. Students’ interest in subscribed resources initiates their professional work with scientific information. Students need to constantly use subscribed resources. Otherwise, the skills of using information e-resources will disappear and motivation for their use will decrease. The development of techniques that can help to maintain students’ interest in information e-resources is continuing, and new findings will be presented in future papers. Originality/value In the scientific literature, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no information is available on the use of similar techniques at Russian universities. It is hoped that developed techniques helps students with low digital literacy from other universities or colleges overcome their bias against high technology.
Currently, the ketogenic diet (KD) is used to treat obesity. A prospective study on the use of KD and nutraceutical correction of the nutritional status of patients with lipedema was carried out. Aim. To study the effect of the ketogenic diet, accompanied by correction of changes in the intestinal microbiome and hepatoprotection,on the reduction of fatty deposits in lipedema and the dynamics of changes in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism hormones. Material and methods. 60 patients with lower limb lipedema of stages I-III were randomized into 2 groups: Group 1 received a lowcalorie diet (LCD), physical exercises in the gym (PE), and physical activity (FA) in the form of daily walking up to 3-5 km/ day. Group 2 received a modified version of the Atkins ketogenic diet, physical exercises in the gym and FA, as well as nutraceutical correction of increased appetite, probiotic intestinal composition, hepatoprotection. The duration of the treatment course was 4 weeks. Anthropometric methods and bioimpedansometry were used to control limb circumferences, waist and thigh. Results and discussion. After treatment, patients in 1st group showed a decrease in body weight, lean and active cell mass, a decrease in musculoskeletal mass, and a decrease in total water due to extracellular water. A decrease in total cholesterol and high density lipoproteins (HDL) fraction, an increase in blood triglyceride fraction was noted. Leptin decreased by 12.73%. Patients of the 2nd group showed a decrease in body weight, fat mass, lean mass, total water and extracellular water. There was a decrease in total cholesterol, triglycerides, transaminases. Leptin decreased by 32.02%, insulin decreased by 9.87%. To prevent the development of fatty hepatosis against the background of the use of KD, patients of the 2nd group received nutraceutical correction: hepatoprotector Gepamin, metaprebiotic Stimbifid-plus, modulating the formation of resident intestinal microbiota. To reduce appetite, the patients of the 2nd group were also prescribed anorexic - an algal product Nativ containing the polysaccharide fucoidan, having a prebiotic effect. Improvement of reparative processes in the liver, suppression of oxidative processes also contributed to the restoration of the sensitivity of insulin receptors, which was confirmed by the normalization of the lipid-carbohydrate spectrum of blood in patients of the 2nd group after the course of the treatment. The insulin decrease in patients of Group 2 indicated not only insulin resistance decrease , but also the lipogenesis decrease and stimulation of lipolysis. Adipose tissue reduction due to lipolysis stimulation was also indicated by a decrease in leptin expression. Conclusion. Thus, a ketogenic diet, accompanied by nutraceutical correction of the intestinal microbiome and hepatoprotection can be effectively used in combination with physical activity in order to reduce body weight, fat mass and edema, as evidenced by a decrease in the expression level of leptin and insulin, correlating with the levels of fat loss and free water.
Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to provide modes of teaching Russian undergraduate students fundamental critical analysis of scientifc papers and ways of identifying misinformation and disinformation in “Academic Writing” discipline. design/methodology/approach. “Academic Writing” discipline was taught to frst-year undergraduate students by scientifc library experts. At a starting period students were asked to complete a questionnaire and perform a test, and then write an essay to identify how students were able to assess Web scientifc literature and verify their “tolerance” to inaccurate and fake scientifc information. Then contact hours on theory and practice of identifying and assessing information were introduced into the curriculum. At the end of the semester lists of works cited in original essays and fnal assays were compared.Findings. The fndings reveal that entirely all frst year undergraduate students lack the ability to differentiate between qualitative certain scientifc information and misinformation and disinformation, and they willingly borrow anything from the Web. However, students acquired necessary skills to assess information critically using socio-technical systems infrastructures.This was demonstrated with list of literature analysis in students’ essays and peer-checking. originality. It is headline news and social networks when it is necessary to distinguish from authentic and inaccurate information. However, skills of critical assessment of scientifc publications are of vital importance at a starting period of studies. In publications of that sort falsifcations, fabrications and other fake discoveries can lead to reputational and fnancial risks, and then trigger unethical demeanour of future researchers. It is qualifed librarians being experts in electronic resources and data based use who are able to get students to “digital hygiene”.Practical implications. The results of the paper can be used for teaching in university curriculum. Embedding information literacy and academic writing as well as involving information resources into students’ curriculum are aimed at the ability to identify misinformation and disinformation. Librarian-developed “Academic writing” discipline component might be introduced into curriculum as a self-contained short course or a composing element of any students’ academic discipline. All this mitigate the risks of applying low-equality, unverifed and openly fake information in educational and scientifc works.
