El estudio de las valoraciones estéticas está presente en los primeros escritos de David Hume y llega a su formulación madura en los Ensayos morales políticos y literarios con la propuesta de una norma de gusto que permite guiarlas y modificarlas. En el presente trabajo nos proponemos mostrar qué características posee lo que hoy llamaríamos la “experiencia estética” en el pensamiento de Hume a fin de determinar por qué en los escritos posteriores al Tratado de la naturaleza humana no es incluido el placer de lo sublime. Nuestra hipótesis es que dicha exclusión responde a una contradicción o incompatibilidad entre este deleite y la moralidad, y no a un desinterés u omisión acrítica por parte del filósofo de un aspecto del gusto que tuvo marcada influencia en los escritores británicos de comienzos y mediados del siglo XVIII.
En nuestro trabajo analizamos la propuesta de una norma del gusto por parte de David Hume en el marco de su filosofía escéptica. Nuestra investigación parte de la premisa de que el filósofo no logra consolidar los principios básicos de una Ciencia del Hombre tal como él mismo propone en la Introducción del Tratado de la naturaleza humana y que, por lo tanto, en varios ámbitos del saber no es posible distinguir cuáles son los principios últimos que rigen el entendimiento y la conducta de los seres humanos. La experiencia estética no escapa a esta dificultad. En este sentido, en nuestro estudio indagamos cuál es el objetivo y la finalidad de Hume en los Ensayos morales políticos y literarios al proponer el dictamen de jueces idóneos como guía de las valoraciones estéticas. Nuestra atención está puesta en determinar por qué un pensador escéptico estaría interesado en regular los juicios de gusto. Al mismo tiempo, y a fin de desentrañar en toda su complejidad la propuesta humeana, nos detendremos a examinar los rasgos característicos de la esfera de la sensibilidad teniendo en cuenta sus semejanzas y diferencias con el pensamiento de Hutcheson.
En el presente trabajo se realiza un estudio comparativo entre el ensayo Sobre el suicidio de Hume y las cartas XXI y XXII presentes en la tercera parte de Julia, o la nueva Eloísa de Rousseau, que fueron publicadas en conjunto por un editor anónimo en Inglaterra en 1783. Se analizan los argumentos presentes en cada uno de los textos, la disímil recepción que tuvieron por parte de los lectores de la época y las posibles fuentes compartidas. A partir de dicho estudio, se intenta mostrar cómo el estilo literario en el que están escritas estas obras, compartido por varios pensadores del siglo XVIII, se corresponde con la pretensión de generar un tipo de reflexión filosófica particular acorde con aquellos temas que no caen bajo el dominio de reglas generales.
