A digital twin is a powerful new concept in computational modelling that aims to produce a one-to-one mapping of a physical structure, operating in a specific context, into the digital domain. The development of a digital twin provides clear benefits in improved predictive performance and in aiding robust decision making for operators and asset managers. One key feature of a digital twin is the ability to improve the predictive performance over time, via improvements of the digital twin. An important secondary function is the ability to inform the user when predictive performance will be poor. If regions of poor performance are identified, the digital twin must offer a course of action for improving its predictive capabilities. In this paper three sources of improvement are investigated; (i) better estimates of the model parameters, (ii) adding/updating a data-based component to model unknown physics, and (iii) the addition of more physics-based modelling into the digital twin. These three courses of actions (along with taking no further action) are investigated through a probabilistic modelling approach, where the confidence of the current digital twin is used to inform when an action is required. In addition to addressing how a digital twin targets improvement in predictive performance, this paper also considers the implications of utilising a digital twin in a control context, particularly when the digital twin identifies poor performance of the underlying modelling assumptions. The framework is applied to a three-storey shear structure, where the objective is to construct a digital twin that predicts the acceleration response at each of the three floors given an unknown (and hence, unmodelled) structural state, caused by a contact nonlinearity between the upper two floors. This is intended to represent a realistic challenge for a digital twin, the case where the physical twin will degrade with age and the digital twin will have to make predictions in the presence of unforeseen physics at the time of the original model development phase.
Modern aero-engines have reached a high level of sophistication and only significant changes will lead to the improvements necessary to achieve the economic and environmental targets of the future. Open rotors constitute a major leap in this direction, both in terms of efficiency and of technological innovation. This calls for a revision of the accepted design practices, and a new focus on phenomena that have been little investigated in the past, such as the Coriolis effect, or the gyroscopic coupling of the blades with the shaft. Experimental results from modern fans, with large blades and strong stagger angles, are showing dependence on Coriolis gyroscopic effects already, an effect that is expected to be strongly enhanced with the proposed open rotor designs. For an accurate prediction of the Coriolis and gyroscopic effects in rotating assemblies a fully experimentally validated approach is needed. Today’s FE models can capture the basic physical phenomena, but experimental confirmation is still needed for the evolution of the mode shapes with angular speed, and the influence of damping and geometric nonlinearities when gyroscopic coupling is considered. To support this validation effort a new rotating test rig will be introduced, initial measurement data will be discussed, and a comparison with a finite element analysis presented. Different forcing patterns, including forward and backward travelling-wave engine order excitation could be experimentally excited in the new rig, Coriolis-induced frequency splits were found in the dynamic response, showing a significant change in the dynamic behaviour of the investigated dummy disk, and only a minor impact of the mistuning was observed on the frequency splits due to Coriolis effects. The experimental results have been compared to a finite element analysis, and after some updating a good agreement between the predicted and measured Campbell diagrams could be obtained, demonstrating the reliability of the modelling approach.
High cycle fatigue (HCF) caused by large resonant stresses is a common cause for turbine blades failure. Passive damping systems, such as friction dampers are often used by aero-engine manufacturers to reduce the resonant stresses and mitigate the risk of HCF. The presence of friction dampers makes the dynamics of the system highly nonlinear, due to the complex stick-slip and separation phenomena taking place at the contact interface. Due to this nonlinear behaviour, an accurate understanding of the operating deflection shapes is needed for an accurate stress prediction.In this study, digital image correlation (DIC) in combination with a high speed camera is used to provide insights into the kinematics of the damper in a recently developed test rig. The in-phase and out-of-phase first bending modes of the blades were investigated leading to a full field measurement of the global ODS of the blades, and the local motion of the damper against its platforms. A significant change in the blades operational deflection shape could be observed due to the damper, and the sliding and rolling motion of the damper during a vibration cycle was accurately visualised.
