The search for techniques and materials able to improve structure quality and durability has lead to research some methods that are able to measure the transfer properties of composites. Cement type has an important influence on mortar performance, and chemical and physical deteriorations modify microstructure, and thereby transfer properties. The aim of this work is to evaluate two methods which can measure the transfer properties of cement based materials: capillary absorption and air permeability tests in mortars produced with blastfurnace slag Portland cement. The relationship between these two methods was investigated. The mortars were submitted to steam curing (60 °C) and standard curing. Results show that steam curing improved initial compressive strength. At 28 days all mortars had the same performance. Water absorption coefficient and air permeability was higher for steam cured mortars. There was a significant correlation between both tests results.
Permeability of cement-based materials is the principal factor that provides its durability. Thus, several methodologies have been developed for measuring this property. Discrepancies in results can be generated due to large number of methods, mathematics equations and methodologies employed. Thenoz method is one method developed for measuring air permeability of porous media and have demonstrated good and satisfactory results, in accordance to several scientific researches. The aim of this work was to study the flow mechanism in a porous media, in particular a concrete media, evaluating Reynolds number and flow velocity of air outflow occurred when Thenoz method was employed to measure concrete air permeability. The Reynolds number results showed that outflow regime occurs in laminar form and validate the hypothesis to confirm the model. Tests were performed to verify the veracity of results obtained in accordance this methodology. Results have shown that air permeability measured by Thenoz method is a good test to evaluate concrete porosity.
Management of human resources is an efficient method for improving the productivity of operational workers. Improving productivity of workers, companies may increase their market share, become more competitive and, consequently, increase their profitability. Thus, this study aims to identify the main needs of construction workers in São Paulo city, Brazil. For this it was applied a questionnaire based on Maslow’s Theory of Motivation – Hierarchy Needs. The questionnaire was applied to thirty-one (31) operational workers in one construction site in São Paulo city, Brazil. Results have shown that security, collaboration, consideration by work realized and greater respect from superiors (bosses) are the main requirements of these workers.
Gypsum plaster is a material used as internal covering of walls in Brazilian constructions. However, this material has short setting times and generates a great quantity of material loss. The low energy necessary to dehydrate the waste material for utilization becomes recycling methods viable, since the recycled products have the same properties of the commercial material. This paper aims to evaluate the behavior of recycled gypsum plaster calcined at 100 °C, 150 °C and 200 °C. It was also studied the use an admixture (superplasticizer). Physical and mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed that the dehydration temperature influences in both fresh and hardened gypsum properties. The temperature of 200 °C reported better values of initial and final setting times and compressive strength. Calcination at 150 °C showed higher values of hardness. The admixture utilization modified the initial and final setting times.
