Bezerra VS, Santana RS, Brito BAM et al. ABSTRACT Objective: to know the risks of a biological nature faced by nurses in the Intensive Care Unit and preventive actions taken in daily work. Method: a descriptive study of qualitative approach, developed with five nurses working in critical sectors of a hospital. We used interviews and categories were developed based on the Discourse of the Collective Subject method. Results: The five categories were: Nurses perception of biological hazards in the Intensive Care Unit, Nurses exposure to biological hazards in the ICU, Biosecurity measures used by nurses in the prevention of biological hazards in the ICU, Reflection of nurses on working conditions involving biohazards in the ICU, Training and updating of standard precautionary measures against biological risks in the ICU. Conclusion: accidents can be avoided or minimized with the use of personal protective equipment properly, care in handling sharp objects and knowledge of biological waste.
