A number of Internet measurement platforms have emerged in the last few years. These platforms have deployed thousands of probes at strategic locations within access and backbone networks and behind residential gateways. In this paper we provide a taxonomy of these measurement platforms on the basis of their deployment use-case. We describe these platforms in detail by exploring their coverage, scale, lifetime, deployed metrics and measurement tools, architecture and overall research impact. We conclude the survey by describing current standardization efforts to make large-scale performance measurement platforms interoperable.

Reproducibility is one of the key characteristics of good science, but hard to achieve for experimental disciplines like Internet measurements and networked systems. This guide provides advice to researchers, particularly those new to the field, on designing experiments so that their work is more likely to be reproducible and to serve as a foundation for follow-on work by others. We reflect upon our experience in using the RIPE Atlas platform for measurement-based research. We show how in addition to credits, control checks using rate limits are in place to ensure that the platform does not get overloaded with measurements. We show how the Autonomous System (AS)-based distribution of RIPE Atlas probes is heavily skewed which limits possibilities of measurements sourced from a specific origin-AS. We discuss the significance of probe calibration and how we leverage it to identify load issues in older hardware versions (38.6% overall as of Sep 2014) of probes. We show how performance measurement platforms (such as RIPE Atlas, SamKnows, BISmark and Dasu) can benefit from each other by demonstrating two example use-cases. We also open discussion on how RIPE Atlas deployment can be made more useful by relaying more probe metadata information back to the scientific community and by strategically deploying probes to reduce the inherent sampling bias embedded in probe-based measurement platforms.

There is significant interest in the technical and policy communities regarding the extent, scope, and consumer harm of persistent interdomain congestion. We provide empirical grounding for discussions of interdomain congestion by developing a system and method to measure congestion on thousands of interdomain links without direct access to them. We implement a system based on the Time Series Latency Probes (TSLP) technique that identifies links with evidence of recurring congestion suggestive of an under-provisioned link. We deploy our system at 86 vantage points worldwide and show that congestion inferred using our lightweight TSLP method correlates with other metrics of interconnection performance impairment. We use our method to study interdomain links of eight large U.S. broadband access providers from March 2016 to December 2017, and validate our inferences against ground-truth traffic statistics from two of the providers. For the period of time over which we gathered measurements, we did not find evidence of widespread endemic congestion on interdomain links between access ISPs and directly connected transit and content providers, although some such links exhibited recurring congestion patterns. We describe limitations, open challenges, and a path toward the use of this method for large-scale third-party monitoring of the Internet interconnection ecosystem.

Teleoperated Driving is the remote control driving of a vehicle by a human driver. The concept of Teleoperated Driving requires the use of mobile networks, which typically experience variable throughput, variable latency and uneven network coverage. To investigate whether Teleoperated Driving can be possible with contemporary mobile networks, we have conducted measurements while driving with vehicles in the real world. We used complementary measurement setups to obtain results that can be compared. The dataset consists of about 5200 km (4660 minutes) driving measurements. Results show that Teleoperated Driving could be possible, but the high variance of network parameters makes it difficult to use the system at all times. It appears that the speed of the vehicle and the distance to the base station may not influence Teleoperated Driving, while handover with changed radio technology, signal strength and distance to the teleoperation station may have an impact. Possible mitigations to overcome these problems along with a basic whitelisting approach is discussed.
