This study aimed to develop a low-cost method for mapping summer crops in the Rio Grande do Sul State, from the spectraltemporal behavior of vegetation indices and the HAND Model. The study was conducted in the Rio Grande do Sul State in the 2011/2012 harvest. It was used EVI images from the MODIS sensor and SRTM data. To evaluate the results, we used field data and IBGE data and a reference map elaborated with RapidEye images. The results of the MODIS classification and the IBGE data generated a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.98 for rice and 0.89 for soybeans. Validation with data collected in the field, irrigated rice obtained a Kappa coefficient of 0.66 and soybean, 0.61. In the Fuzzy similarity analysis, the irrigated rice achieved a similarity of 87% and soybean, 81%. Therefore, multi-temporal MODIS data, combined with the delineation of flood areas, using the HAND model, allow to estimate the area planted with the main summer crops in the Rio Grande do Sul State.
The present study aimed to characterize the dynamics of NDVI and meteorological conditions, relating both to the annual dynamics of biomass accumulation in natural pastures of the Pampa biome as a way of subsidizing growth modeling. Forage accumulation rate data from a long-term experiment, NDVI data from the MODIS images, and meteorological data measured at the surface were used. We verify that the agrometeorological element associated to the accumulation of forage in the natural grasslands is different according to the season, which is typical of the subtropical climate. Winter is the critical season for livestock production due to the lower forage accumulation rate and lower
This study aimed to verify the applicability of using MODIS-EVI sensor time series for land use and vegetation cover mapping in the Pampa biome, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The study period comprised the months from June 2013 to June 2014. The procedures included the use of MODIS Sensor images, altimetric data and nighttime images, associated with a hierarchical decision tree classifier, constructed using the C4.5 algorithm. The proposed approach stems from the consideration that the study area has varying characteristics and, therefore, should be treated simultaneously by different and intuitive classifiers, which justifies the choice of decision tree. To evaluate the results, reference data acquired from Landsat 8-OLI satellite images and IBGE data were used. The classification using the MODIS time series showed a global accuracy of 90.09% and Kappa index of 0.8885. When compared to the IBGE reference data, the Soybean class obtained a correlation coefficient of 0.94, the rice class obtained 0.97 and the silviculture class obtained the lowest value, 0.78. The highest spectral similarities were found in the vegetation cover classes, such as grassland, forest and silviculture. Therefore, with the use of multitemporal data from the MODIS sensor, combined with the use of altimetric data and nighttime images, it is possible to generate a land use and vegetation cover map for the Pampa biome with an acceptable accuracy, considering the MODIS sensor resolution limitations.
ABSTRACT:One of the most relevant activities of Brazilian economy is agriculture. Among the main crops in Brazil, rice is one of high relevance. The state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Southern Brazil, is responsible for 68.7% of domestic production (IBGE, 2013). The goal of this study was to develop a low-cost methodology with a regional scope to identify suitable areas for irrigated rice cropping in this state, using spectro-temporal behavior of vegetation index by means of MODIS images and HAND model. The rice-cropped area of this study was the southern half of the State. Using the HAND model, flood areas were mapped to identify irrigated rice cultivation. We used multi-temporal images of vegetation index from MODIS sensor, covering the period from August 2001 to May 2012. To assess the results, we used data collected in the fields and cropped area information from IBGE. The results showed that the proposed methodology was satisfactory, with Kappa 0.92 and global accuracy of 98.18%. As result, MODIS sensor data and flood areas delineation by means of HAND model generated the estimate irrigated rice area for the area of study.KEYWORDS: HAND Model, EVI, MODIS, irrigated rice, mapping.
