MR imaging has a high sensitivity for detection of fractures of the scaphoid bone and wrist not evident on plain radiographs and may enable early diagnosis and treatment.
High-spatial-resolution US is a reliable diagnostic tool for the evaluation of occult scaphoid fractures and should be considered an adequate alternative diagnostic tool prior to computed tomography or MR imaging.
The purpose of this study was to document the longterm clinical, radiographic, and magnetic resonance imaging results after open meniscal repair. Twenty-two patients, with 23 open meniscal repairs, were evaluated after a mean follow-up of 12.9 years using patient history, physical examination, KT-1000 arthrometer testing, the "Orthopaedische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Knie" knee evaluation scheme, Tegner activity score, weightbearing radiographs, and magnetic resonance imaging. Two of the 22 patients had retears and both occurred in unstable knees. Radiographs revealed no degenerative changes in 17 of the 23 compartments. Grade III and IV signal alterations were present on magnetic resonance imaging scans in more than 50% of the repaired menisci. We concluded that the longterm survival rate of repaired menisci was 91%, and that magnetic resonance imaging is unsuitable for diagnosis of the healing process of a repaired meniscus.
In this prospective study, the authors examined 123 patients with benign or malignant neoplasms (breast cancer, n = 44; liver neoplasms, n = 43; and tumors affecting other organs, n = 36) to establish general criteria for evaluation of neoplastic lesions by means of duplex sonography. The frequency shifts determined by means of different Doppler frequencies (2.31 or 3.75 MHz) were converted into flow velocities. Only the highest systolic peak flow velocity obtained from a lesion was used for statistical evaluation. Receiver operating characteristic curves showed that a flow velocity of 0.4 m/sec is the optimal threshold value with which to differentiate benign from malignant tumors. The data obtained in all lesions indicated that only positive findings are potentially reliable. It is concluded that negative results of sonography should not be used to diagnose the presence of a benign lesion. The resistive index of the tumors was of negligible importance.
