The dielectric function and momentum relaxation time of carriers for a single-crystal GaSe were investigated using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy over the frequency range from 0.4to2.4THz. The key parameters determined from THz data using the Drude model are: the plasma frequency ωp=2.6±0.2THz, the average momentum relaxation time ⟨τ⟩=56±2fs, and the mobility μ=89cm2∕Vs for electrons. The THz absorption spectrum showed resonance structures attributed to the difference frequency combinations associated with acoustical and optical phonons.
We show what is believed to be the first coherent white-light optical vortices generated from supercontinuum that have the azimuthally varying phase structure consistent with a monochromatic Laguerre-Gaussian beam. Two methods of Laguerre-Gaussian supercontinuum generation are discussed and contrasted. We use a computer-generated hologram to convert a Gaussian white-light supercontinuum source into Laguerre-Gaussian supercontinuum.
Laser skin welding (LSW) is being pursued for scarless wound healing. We present a new LSW approach using a contact glass slide over the sample and rapid scanning of the laser beam around the area to be welded. This led to dramatic improvement in welding efficacy. A 400 mW beam at 1455 nm with a focused spot diameter of 80 µm in air was scanned at a rate of 5mm/second over a 5mm line of incision in 5 mm x 20 mm human skin samples. Histological analysis of the welded samples using hematoxyline and eosin under unpolarized light showed full-thickness full-length weld, and that with picrosirius red F3BA stain under polarized light revealed that there was no appreciable damage. Measured tensile strength of 2.1 kg/cm 2 is markedly greater than our previous LSW results of 1.05 ± 0.19 kg/cm 2 , which is greater than the typical values of 0.4 kg/cm 2 obtained using sutures.
The dielectric function and momentum relaxation time of carriers for a single-crystal GaSe were investigated using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy over the frequency range from 0.4 to 2.4 THz. The key parameters determined from THz data using the Drude model are: the plasma frequency ωp = 6.1 ± 0.5 THz, the average momentum relaxation time <τ> = 51 +± 6 fs for electrons. The THz absorption spectrum showed resonance structures attributed to the difference frequency combinations associated with acoustical and optical phonons.
