India is the highest milk producing country in the world. The milk production in Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts had also increased in the last few years. In a view to assess the increase in milk production, a study on milk production trends was undertaken at Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts. A total of 120 dairy farmers were randomly selected and data were collected using an interview schedule. The secondary data were obtained from Kolar Milk Union Limited. The compound growth of volume of milk procurement during 1998-99 to 2011-12 is 4 per cent and seasonality in milk procurement was highest in the months of October and November and lowest in April and March. Suitable extension strategies should be developed in order to curb the fluctuation in milk production, this fluctuation may be due to unavailability of feed and green fodder, so suitable strategies should be taken to encourage conservation of fodder and to make it available throughout the year.
The agricultural and livestock research, education, and extension are important components for increasing production and meeting the demands of the growing population with sustainability. In this context, knowledge or information is very critical for improving the production under the present extension delivery system in India. Several studies have highlighted emerging ICTs which have the potential to reach the mass population at a limited time despite traditional media. One such emerging ICT is Social Media, which is utilized by most of the stakeholders, including farmers around the globe. Hence, for documenting its application for livestock information needs among the livestock farmers, an ex-post-facto exploratory study was conducted in Southern Karnataka using 108 purposively selected farmers, which comprised of 36 farmers each belonging to dairy, poultry and sheep and goat husbandry with pre-tested structured interview schedule. Majority of the farmers in each category were aware about social media and possessed social media accounts with highest number of WhatsApp accounts being possessed by the farmers. Social media was utilized for obtaining information about latest livestock production and management practices in all the categories. From these findings, it could be elucidated that the respondents predominantly perceived that social media had higher benefits in attaining livestock related information and adoption of digital knowledge into practice.
An ex-post facto research design was adopted to study the growth and composition of cattle markets
in eastern dry zone of Karnataka. The study sample comprised of six cattle markets and two annual
cattle fairs. Ten sellers, ten buyers and five brokers from each market and cattle fair were selected
randomly. The study revealed that sale of cows and bullocks in Chikka ballapur were stagnant over
the years, whereas in Mulbagal, market sale of bullocks decreased at 39.54%. Prices of both cows
and bullocks increased substantially over the years in the study area. Price of cows increased at
14.2 per cent per annum in both the markets and rapid increase in price of bullock was seen in
Mulbagal (15.27% per annum) market. Sale of bullocks as well as price was higher in May, June
and July months while, cow sales were higher in May and June months and prices were higher
in July and August. Efforts have to be made to stabilise sale and price by introducing fairly high
competition through facilitating movement of animals to deficit areas.
