The frequency, line shape, and intensity of the S0(1) quadrupole absorption line of gaseous H2 have been measured in the pressure range 50–1500 Torr(1 Torr = 133.3 Pa), using a diode laser spectrometer. The line profile exhibits Dicke narrowing, the minimum width at a pressure near 100 Torr being about one-half the Doppler width. The variation of line width with pressure is not in complete agreement with theoretical models. The line frequency extrapolated to zero pressure equals 587.03202 ± 0.00021 cm−1, whereas the quadrupole moment deduced from the integrated intensity of the line equals [Formula: see text].
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
