СОДЕРЖАНИЕВ последние годы усилился интерес к естественному низкочастотному электромагнитному излучению и способам его распространения через верхнюю атмосферу. В связи с этим были предприняты также исследова-ния по распространению низкочастотных электромагнитных сигналов, посылаемых радиостанциями. Число работ (по большей части эксперимен-тальных, вернее, наблюдательного характера), посвященных этому кругу вопросов, непрерывно возрастает.Значительная часть естественного излучения обусловлена атмосфер-ными электрическими разрядами, воспринимаемыми в форме свистящего звука (свистящие атмосферики). Другая часть связана с взаимодействием потоков заряженных частиц, идущих от Солнца, с ионизированным газом верхней атмосферы Земли. Наблюдения такого излучения вошли в про-грамму Международного Геофизического Года (МГГ) и проводились на многочисленных специальных станциях. Речь идет о частотах 0,4-ч-15 кгц (длинах волн 750-:-20 км). Этот интервал частот лежит в пределах слыши-мости человеческого уха (16 гц^-20 кгц), и колебания указанного диапазона непосредственно слышны через громкоговоритель. Это обстоятельство оказалось весьма благоприятным для исследования рассматриваемого излучения, так как первичное наблюдение можно вести просто на слух.
