Self-organization is the generation of order out of local interactions. It is deeply connected to many fields of science from physics, chemistry to biology, all based on physical interactions. The emergence of collective animal behavior is the result of self-organization processes as well, though they involve abstract interactions arising from sensory inputs, information processing, storage, and feedback. Resulting collective behaviors are found, for example, in crowds of people, flocks of birds, and swarms of bacteria. Here we introduce interactions between active microparticles which are based on the information about other particle positions. A real-time feedback of multiple active particle positions is the information source for the propulsion direction of these particles. The emerging structures require continuous information flows. They reveal frustrated geometries due to confinement to two dimensions and internal dynamical degrees of freedom that are reminiscent of physically bound systems, though they exist only as nonequilibrium structures.
Using phase control between four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) channels in a four-level atomic system, we demonstrate temporal and spatial interferences between these two nonlinear optical processes. Efficient and coexisting FWM and SWM signals are produced in the same electromagnetically induced transparency window via atomic coherence. The temporal interference has a femtosecond time scale corresponding to the optical transition frequency. Such studies of intermixing between different order nonlinear optical processes with a controllable phase delay can have important applications in high-precision measurements, coherence quantum control, and quantum information processing.
Fusion cross sections were measured for the exotic proton-halo nucleus ⁸B incident on a ⁵⁸Ni target at several energies near the Coulomb barrier. This is the first experiment to report on the fusion of a proton-halo nucleus. The resulting excitation function shows a striking enhancement with respect to expectations for normal projectiles. Evidence is presented that the sum of the fusion and breakup yields saturates the total reaction cross section.
Photon nudging is a new experimental method which enables the force-free manipulation and localization of individual self-propelled artificial micro-swimmers in fluidic environments. It uses a weak laser to stochastically and adaptively turn on and off the swimmer's propulsion when the swimmer, through rotational diffusion, points towards or away from its target, respectively. This contribution presents a theoretical framework for the statistics of both 2D and 3D controls. The main results are: the on- and off-time distributions for the controlling laser, the arrival time statistics for the swimmer to reach a remote target, and how the experimentally accessible control parameters influence the control, e.g., the optimal acceptance angle for directed transport. The results are general in that they are independent of the propulsion or the actuation mechanisms. They provide a concrete physical picture for how a single artificial micro-swimmer could be navigated under thermal fluctuations-insights that could also be useful for understanding biological micro-swimmers.
