The number of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases is increasing in Pakistan while it has seen a decline globally. A survey conducted recently has found that 132,000 people in Pakistan suffer from HIV. This study aims to check the levels of knowledge and attitudes about HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among medical and dental students. This cross-sectional study was designed and conducted at Combined Military Hospital Lahore Medical College and the Institute of Dentistry (CMH LMC) in Lahore, Pakistan in 2016. Students enrolled in the courses of the MBBS and BDS were included in this study. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: demographics, knowledge and attitude.A total of 414 students completed the questionnaire and out of them, 286 were medical students while the rest were dental students. The mean ± standard deviation score for the students was 10.02 ± 4.37 out of 17 for knowledge related to HIV and AIDS. For acceptable attitude towards AIDS and patients afflicted with the disease, an outcome of 1.93 ± 0.75 out of 4 was observed. The results of this study indicate lack of knowledge about HIV, especially about the modes of transmission and prevention techniques. Therefore, regular interactive workshops and seminars, besides teaching sessions, focused lectures on HIV/AIDS, need to be conducted.
Introduction: The proliferation of literature regarding the COVID-19 pandemic has served to highlight a wide spectrum of disease manifestations and complications, such as thrombotic microangiopathies. Our review with a brief case presentation highlights the increasing recognition of TTP in COVID-19 and describes its salient characteristics. Methods: We screened the available literature in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases from inception until April 2022 of articles mentioning COVID-19-associated TTP in English language. Results: From 404 records, we included 8 articles mentioning data of 11 patients in our review. TTP was predominantly reported in females (72%) with a mean age of 48.2 years (SD 15.1). Dyspnea was the most common symptom in one third of patients (36.6%). Neurological symptoms were reported in 27.3% of cases. The time to diagnosis of TTP was 10 days (SD 5.8) from onset of COVID-19. All 11 cases underwent plasma exchange (PLEX), with a mean of 12 sessions per patient, whereas 6 cases received Rituximab (54.5%), and 3 received Caplacizumab (27.3%). One patient died from the illness. Conclusion: This review of available literature highlights the atypical and refractory nature of COVID-19-associated TTP. It required longer sessions of PLEX, with half of the patients receiving at least one immunosuppressant.
In the older population, especially the hospitalized patients who are prone to dehydration and hypovolemia, orthostatic hypotension (OH) presents as a debilitating disease. How different pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions affect the incapacitating symptoms (falls and episodes of syncope), morbidity, and mortality related to OH has become a topic of debate. OH can predispose to ischemic heart disease (IHD). A non-pharmacological approach consisting of mobilization, early lifestyle changes, and therapeutic maneuvers is the first choice in the management of these patients. Individuals with persistent symptoms require pharmaceutical therapy to increase blood volume and peripheral vascular resistance. This article summarizes the management of OH that is vital to cope with the needs of the growing geriatric populations.
Objective To assess the level of awareness and reported complaints of occupational health hazards among the welders of Lahore. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study of 70 welders. An interview questionnaire was employed to assess awareness and complaints, the possession and utilization of protective personal equipment (PPE), and socio-demographic characteristics. Results All of the respondents were male with a mean age of 25.7 years. 54.3% of the respondents were aware of welding as a risk to their health. 98.6% possessed at least 1 PPE. There was an association between the level of education and the awareness of a health risk (χ = 6.885; p = 0.032). The most frequent complaint was foreign body in the eye (47.1%) followed by arc eye injury (45.7%), cuts and injuries (50.0%), and burns (48.6%). Conclusion The findings suggest that welders had low level of awareness and reported many complaints of occupational health hazards. Preventive initiatives are recommended.
Risk stratification of individuals at risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) plays an important role in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. In addition to risk scores derived from conventional cardiovascular risk factors, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) have emerged as two of the widely accepted non traditional risk factors for atherosclerotic disease that have shown incremental prognostic value in predicting cardiovascular events. This review systematically assesses the role of hs-CRP and CAC in various studies and demonstrates meta-analyses of the incremental prognostic value of hs-CRP and CAC in identifying patients at risk of future CVD events. Compared with this, CAC showed better incremental prognostic value and might be a better indicator of ASCVD risk in asymptomatic adults.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
