En este trabajo se presenta la síntesis y caracterización de un cerámico híbrido base sílice y polidimetilsiloxano (PDMS) el cual se obtuvo mediante reacciones sol-gel del TEOS condensando con las cadenas de PDMS variando su concentración del 10 al 40%w y empleando HCl como catalizadores sol-gel. La solución sol obtenida es impregnada en un sistema poroso (esponja) para modificar su carácter hidrofílico a hidrofóbico y ser empleada como sistema de remoción de aceite. La modificación de la esponja se evaluó por espectroscopía de infrarrojo observando los modos vibraciones del cerámico, a 1100cm-1 se identificó el enlace siloxano (Si-O-Si) y a 1200 cm-1 (Si-C). Por otra parte, el carácter hidrofóbico se evaluó con el ángulo de contacto observando valores entre 110-130º. La microscopia óptica permitió identificar cambios en la superficie de la esponja debido a la presencia de cerámico y finalmente se determinó el efecto de la cantidad de PDMS sobre la capacidad de remoción de aceite en agua.
