Based on four recently discovered letters written by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert to Karoline Juliane Kirchhoff, this essay provides a model analysis of two main aspects of the eighteenth century's epistolary tradition (›Briefkultur‹): the literalization of the genre and the medium's crystallization into a closed system of communication within society.
