The article presents the new Law Library that was opened to the public in 2004. It was integrated in the courtyard of an existing building; its creator was the engineer and architect Santiago Calatrava. The article touches first on the historical background of the building, then gives an outline of the project development. It goes on to explain some of the ecological and energy-saving measures and finally demonstrates the building itself; as the building cannot be 'explained' the demonstration comes in the form of a running commentary on the slides that were shown at the presentation during the LIBER Architecture seminar in Utrecht. The presentation itself is on the web: http://www.zhbluzern.ch/LIBER-LAG/PP_LAG_06/Thursday/Strehler_ZH-RWI-oA.pdf René Strehler was project manager for the Building Department of the Canton of Zurich, during the construction activities. The Building Department of the Canton of Zurich acted on behalf of the Law Faculty of the University of Zurich. THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING, THE PROJECT, AND A FEW FIGURES Zurich was in a situation similar to many other cities at the beginning of the 19 th century: the need for individual and especially public buildings was growing, but all the available space within the city walls was used up. The illustration below shows the so-called Breitinger map, which depicts the city of Zurich in 1814. You can clearly see the old city walls, which were torn down in 1834. The circle indicates the area of the Schönberg rampart: This is where the Law Faculty is located now.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, libraries with archival responsibilities have been challenged by collection growth and diminishing space. One solution for this challenge has been realised in the creation of central storage libraries which store collections safely. Another potential solution could be agreements made between libraries to store specific volumes on a long term basis at different premises. The following article presents two ongoing projects in Switzerland: the “Kooperative Speicherbibliothek Schweiz” which involves six libraries in the German speaking part of the country, and the “Kooperative Print-Archivierung” which was launched by the Konferenz der Universitätsbibliotheken der Schweiz (KUB).Les bibliothèques patrimoniales sont confrontées au moins depuis le début du XXe siècle à des problèmes de place récurrents.
