Towards a Political History of the Economics of Slavery Ubiratan Araujo This article uses as a main reference a new political history which seeks to perceive the global movement of societies through the concept of "The Political" as a "carrefour" where a number of social relations are mutually connected and condensed. As such, it discusses the conflict of interests between the various groups, classes, and class segments in a post-independence yet slaveholding Bahia, viewing it not only as a result of the reaffirmation of slavery as an institution, but also of the formulation and implementation by the Bahian sugar elites of a true politics of underdevelopment.
