A study was conducted to investigate the effect of sorghum based diets supplemented with enzyme on haematological and serum biochemical responses of grower rabbits. A total of twenty four grower rabbits were used for the investigation which lasted eight weeks. Four experimental diets were formulated which included maize based diet (Control), sorghum based diet supplemented with; Protease (D2), Phytase (D3) and PhytasewithProtease(D4).The rabbits were randomly assigned to the four dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. Rabbitsfed diet containing sorghum with phytase (D3)had high significant (p< 0.05) value of 115.10g for final weight. Least statistically similar values of 1136.80g and 1033.60g were obtained for rabbit fed sorghum with protease plus phytase (D4) and control diet, respectively. The weight gain followed similar trend with the final weight. The dietary treatments had no significant influence (p > 0.05) on all haematological parameters determined. A range of 2.90-3.15 ×10 /l was recorded for red blood cell, and 5.710.60×10/l for White blood cell While MCH and MCV random 27.1632.75pg and 88.5589.35fl, respectively. Sorghum based diet supplemented with enzymes showed significant (p< 0.05) on serum biochemical indices. Parameters that were significantly influenced include; Total protein, globulin, urea, creatinine and cholesterol. Rabbits fed sorghum based diet supplemented with phytase (D3) revealed highest (p < 0.05) values for total protein and globulin. Highest (p<0.05) value of 7.05mmol/l,102.25mmol/l and 4.50mmol/l were recorded for urea, creatinine and cholesterol, respectively in the control diet. In conclusion, sorghum based diets supplemented with enzyme improved rabbit performance, had no allergic effect on health status of rabbit and enhanced serum protein bioavailability with efficient nutrient utilization.
Means of cutting down cost of feed resources in order to bridge the wide gap between demand and supply of animal protein in livestock production is a great concern in the poultry industry. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding diets containing soaked and fermented Baobab seed meal (BSM) on the growth performance of broiler starter chicks. A total of 150, one-day old chicks were randomly distributed into five treatment groups. Treatments were replicated three times with 10 chicks per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The dietary groups were designated as T1 for control (0 % BSM), T2 (7.5 % SBSM), T3 (15.0% SBSM), T4 (22.5% FBSM) and T5 (30 % FBSM). Parameters monitored include final weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, feed cost per kg gain (N) and mortality (%) The experiment lasted for 4 weeks. The results showed that the dietary treatments had significant (P<0.05) effect on all the parameters measured. Final weight and total weight gain were similar and significantly (P<0.05) higher in birds fed diets T2 and T4 when compared to other dietary treatments. However, birds in T5 group had the least significant (P<0.05) values 366.67 and 217.34 g/bird respectively. Daily weight gain (7.76 g/bird/day), total and daily feed intake (873.33 g and 31.19 g/bird/day) of birds followed similar trend and were significantly (P<0.05) lower in T5 group compared to other treatments. Feed conversion ratio of birds fed diet T5 had significantly (P<0.05) higher value (4.29) when compared to those in other treatment groups. Feed cost per kg gain (N) was significantly (P<0.05) lower and similar in birds fed T2, T3 and T4 when compared to values obtained in the control group (N253.27) and T5 (N 327.52). Mortality (%) only occurred in birds fed T5. It was therefore concluded that inclusion of 22.5% fermented baobab seed meal in broiler diets improved performance and had no negative effect on the health status of birds. L'expérience a duré 4 semaines.
Deficit of conventional feed ingredients in meeting increased demand has led to an alarming hike in their prices culminating in sky rocketing cost of livestock feed. This has necessitated an urgent search for low cost and more readily available alternatives. This study was conducted to investigate the performance of broiler chicks fed diets containing graded levels of soaked and boiled Bambara nut seed meal (BNSM). One hundred and five (105), 2 week old broiler starter chicks were used for the experiment. The birds were randomly allotted into four dietary treatments with each treatments replicated thrice at seven birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Five experimental diets were formulated containing processed BNSM designated as T1 (control diet with 0 % BNSM), while T2, T3, T4 and T5 had 5 % soaked BNSM, 10 % soaked BNSM, 5 % boiled BNSM and 10 % boiled BNSM, respectively. The experiment lasted for four (4) weeks. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. The results showed that birds fed processed BNSM diets had significantly (P<0.05) higher final weight and weight gain comparable to 702.38g and 19.99 g/bird/day in the control group. The values obtained from feed intake showed that T2 (64.74 g) had significantly (P<0.05) least value compared to other dietary treatments. Feed conversion ratio and feed cost per kg gain (N) were significantly (P<0.05) better in birds fed processed BNSM diets compared to 3.39 and N215.85 respectively in the control group. It was therefore concluded that processed BNSM improved performance of broiler chickens. L'expérience a duré quatre (4) semaines.
Antibiotic resistance is one of today's most pressing global public health threats which could become the primary cause of human deaths. Efficacy of Garcinia kola as antibiotic growth promoter was evaluated in assessing growth response and blood profile of broiler chicks. A total of 240, one day-old broiler chicks were used in four weeks feeding trial to assess the effect of dietary intake of bitter kola (Garcinia kola) on growth performance and blood indices of broiler chicks. Six experimental diets were formulated such that diet T1 (Control) contains no bitter kola (BK) while diets T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 contained varying levels of BK at 10g/kg, 20g/kg, 30g/kg, 40g/kg and 50g/kg, respectively. The broiler chicks were weighed and allotted to six dietary treatments of 40 birds each. The groups were replicated four times in a completely randomized design of 10 birds per replicate. The parameters determined for growth performance were final weight (g), weight gain (g/bird), daily weight gain (g/bird), feed intake (g/bird), daily feed intake (g/bird) and feed conversion ratio (FCR).Supplementation of graded levels of bitter kola had significant (p<0.05) influence on all parameters measured. Birds fed diet containing 0g/kg bitter kola (T1) showed least (P<0.05) value of 1220.00g for final weight. Though not statistically difference, birds fed 20g/kg diet (T3) showed highest numerical value 1403.67g at comparative level across dietary treatments. With the exception of birds feed 0g/kg bitter kola (T1) similar statistical values were recorded for feed conversion ratio (FCR). Dietary treatments had significant (P<0.05) effect on haematological parameters determined. Diets with bitter kola supplementation up to 20g/kg diet could be fed to starter broiler chicks for improved growth performance without adverse effect.
