A new approach to the analysis of Mossbauer spectra for garnets with mixed valence iron is made. Values for the recoil-free fraction ratios are extracted and a more acceptable approximation procedure is obtained for the derivation of the Fe(3 +)/Fe(2+) ratio.
Outline of the MethodSilicate minerals of the garnet group have the formula X3Y2Z30,,, with the X cations in the dodecahedra1 sites, the Y ones in the octahedral sites, and the Z ones in the tetrahedral sites. Using the formalism as developed in [l] we may write for the general case of a garnet, without any restrictions as to the type of iron ions that may enter any of the available L(X) = 3.0, L(Y) = 2.0, L(Z) = 3.0. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
