O processo de contaminação das águas ocorre a nível global, sendo que uma das patologias inerentes à contaminação da água é a Leptospirose, causada pela bactéria Leptospira interrogans. Outra famosa patologia relacionada à água contaminada é a Esquistossomose, uma doença parasitária causada pelo Schistosoma mansoni, um helminto. No contexto específico de Maceió, capital de Alagoas, o saneamento básico possui uma cobertura, segundo a Prefeitura de Maceió (2016), em apenas 19% da cidade, um valor considerado extremamente baixo. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar o perfil epidemiológico das internações por Leptospirose e Esquistossomose, doenças que são transmitidas através do contato com a água contaminada, no município de Maceió. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico ecológico, retrospectivo, descritivo com abordagem quantitativa. Os dados são oriundos do Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS), no campo Informações de Saúde (TABNET) do setor de Sistema de Informações Hospitalares (SIH). Observaram-se 163 casos de internações por Leptospirose e Esquistossomose no município de Maceió, de 2015 a 2020. A taxa média anual de incidência foi de 2,55/100.000 habitantes. O número de casos por ano e o coeficiente de incidência apresentaram menores valores nos anos de 2015 e 2016. Conclui-se que as internações por doenças transmitidas através do contato com a água contaminada são um grave problema de saúde pública, sendo notória a necessidade de medidas de saneamento básico e de controle na qualidade da água distribuída para a população.
