Angiography is the standard clinical test for advanced coronary artery disease. Tomographic cardiovascular imaging tests, ie, intravascular ultrasonography (IVUS), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), can be used to assess atherosclerotic plaques responsible for early, silent disease and may become important tools for early detection and prevention.
In this report, we describe two cases of attempted mitral valvuloplasty using an Inoue balloon in which left atrial thrombus was not present before transseptal puncture but developed within minutes of the puncture in one, and within 1 mo in the other, despite systemic anticoagulation.
The authors report a case of intra-aortic balloon rupture and entrapment in a patient with extensive vascular disease. The balloon was subsequently removed percutaneously. A review of the diagnosis and management of this unusual complication is presented.
