Objectives:To estimate the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) among female patients, age 18-60 years, attending primary health care centers (PHCCs) and to measure its determinants, and reporting behavior.Methods:A cross-sectional study design using validated, translated, and self-administered questionnaire among 497 Saudi female patients attending PHCCs in Taif, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) from January to February 2015 was employed. A 2-stage probability sampling was adopted for selection of PHCCs in the first stage, and then participants in the second stage.Results:The estimated prevalence of IPV during the last year was 11.9%. Predictors of IPV related to abused women included divorced status and divorced parents; while those related to abusers (husbands) included widowed parents, exposure to violence in childhood, and alcohol or drugs addiction. Most of the abused wives (56%) talked regarding their IPV to their families, their husbands’ families (15.2%), or their friends (11.8%); while only a minority (3.3%) complained to the police or to a judge, and no one reported this to a family physician, or to women protection agency.Conclusion:One out of 10 women is a victim of IPV in Taif, KSA. Intimate partner violence is significantly associated with a number of victim and abuser-related psychosocial factors, the detection of which might help screening for individuals at risk.
In the oil and gas industries, predicting and classifying oil and gas production for hydrocarbon wells is difficult. Most oil and gas companies use reservoir simulation software to predict future oil and gas production and devise optimum field development plans. However, this process costs an immense number of resources and is time consuming. Each reservoir prediction experiment needs tens or hundreds of simulation runs, taking several hours or days to finish. In this paper, we attempt to overcome these issues by creating machine learning and deep learning models to expedite the process of forecasting oil and gas production. The dataset was provided by the leading oil producer, Saudi Aramco. Our approach reduced the time costs to a worst-case of a few minutes. Our study covered eight different ML and DL experiments and achieved its most outstanding R2 scores of 0.96 for XGBoost, 0.97 for ANN, and 0.98 for RNN over the other experiments.
This research explores the principle barriers to and facilitators of the use of Smart Home Technology, telemonitoring and telemedicine systems to support healthcare and enable older adults to maintain their independence. The research focuses on organizational rather than technological issues. Semi-structured interviews explored the perspectives of three populations of stakeholders (N = 17): managers of rest homes/retirement villages, technology developers in a university setting and older adults (age 65 years and older). Key barriers to and facilitators of adoption are identified for the stakeholder groups. The results indicate that a lack of information about the capabilities and availability of the technologies is a key barrier to adoption. Other issues identified in previous studies are also found to be relevant, such as costs, platform management and infrastructure, and human issues such as privacy. The research provides practical recommendations for directions to be explored by developers and researchers in New Zealand and elsewhere.
BackgroundCerebral palsy (CP) is a chronic disorder of motion, posture, and tone which occurs due to brain insult during the period of brain growth. It is a disabling disorder in both motor and intellectual aspects. Fortunately, CP is a manageable disease that can be managed in part by increasing the knowledge and understanding of the parents. MethodologyThis cross-sectional, prospective, community-based study aimed to assess the level of parents' knowledge and their attitude toward CP using an electronic questionnaire. The parents' knowledge was classified as good or poor based on an adopted scoring system. The parents' attitude was categorized as positive or negative. ResultsOur study results showed that good knowledge (those with a score more than 60% of the total score) was noted in 275 (61.1%) participants, whereas 175 of the participants had poor knowledge (38.9%), especially regarding awareness of the diagnosis of CP. ConclusionsMost participants had an overall good knowledge of CP although they had insufficient knowledge of some aspects of the disease such as causes, disease course, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and prognosis. Although the results showed a positive attitude concerning playing with a child with CP, unfortunately, there was a negative attitude toward hiring a CP patient and a strongly negative attitude toward marrying a patient with CP.
