The objective of this study was to document the frequency of occurrence of very rare fish species as well as to note the changes in diversity over time. Fish species recorded fewer than five times over the past 40 years from the coasts of Izmir (central Aegean Sea) were included in the account and considered as being very rare. The records are listed chronologically. Fish species recently recorded in the area for the first time are also included. Changes in qualitative and quantitative composition of the ichthyofauna along the coasts of Izmir are also discussed.

SummaryThis work focuses on reproductive biology aspects of Uranoscopus scaber from the coast of the Aegean Sea. In total, 175 U. scaber specimens were collected in Izmir Bay using trawl nets from January to December 2005. The reproduction period according to gonadosomatic index (GSI) values extents from March to September, with a peak in May (6.32 ± 1.2). Oocyte diameters taken from 59 mature gonads ranged from 62 to 1860 lm. Maximum batch fecundity (BF) was 58091 (mean: 11556 ± 1445) in large oocytes in May, and 8408 (mean: 2821 ± 945) in hydrated oocytes in September. The BF increased with total length and body weight, excluding the ovaries. Total length (TL)-BF relationships and fish weight-BF relationships were BF = 0.0034TL 4.6248 (r = 0.47) and BF = 59.166W)3101 (r = 0.49), respectively, according to the oocyte size frequency method. There was a linear relationship between BF and fish size.

This review reports fish diversity from the coastal waters of TRNC. From the results of collected studies for both fishery and ichthyoplankton in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), we determined totally 170 fish species, belongs to 86 families. TRNC fisheries consists of small scale such as gillnet, trammel net, longline and handline fisheries.

Salaria fluviatilis (Asso,1801), Blenniidae familyasının Akdeniz'de temsil edilen tek tatlısu türüdür. Bu çalışmada, ülkemiz içsularında ilk kez doğadan örneklenen bir kemikli balığa ait yumurta ve larvaların morfolojik özellikleri verilmiştir. 22 Temmuz 2012'de Gökova Körfezi'ne açılan Akyaka Azmak Nehri'nden S. fluviatilis türüne ait çok sayıda aynı gelişim evresindeki (çoğunluğu son safhaya erişmiş) yumurtalar tespit edilmiştir. Demersal özellikteki yumurtaların çapları; 0,89-1,31x0,78-1,23 mm, bu yumurtalardan çıkan prelarvaların boyları; 2,4-3,8 mm, postlarvalarınki 3,3-4,2 mm olarak ölçülmüştür.

In this review, updated checklist of marine fish in the Bay of Gökova, southeastern Aegean Sea was presented. From the results of relevant studies, based on the coastal fisheries in Gökova Bay, we therefore determined totally 205 fish species, belonging to 95 families. Coastal fisheries in Gökova Bay consist of small scale such as gillnet, trammel net, longline and handline fisheries.

In this study, ichthyoplankton samples collected during the July 1998 cruise of the R/V K. Piri Reis in the Northern Cyprus marine areas were evaluated. Samples were collected at 40 stations at 300-1200 m depth and yielded 73 eggs and 160 larvae in total belonging to 24 fish families including Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Gonostomatidae, Sternoptychidae, Chloropthalmidae, Paralepididae, Synodontidae, Myctophidae, Holocentridae, Triglidae, Carangidae, Sparidae, Mullidae, Labridae, Gobiidae, Trichiuridae and Soleidae. Among the deep marine species, Myctophiformes and Stomiiformes were the most important orders ranking first (29%) and second (12%), respectively. Anchovy eggs ranked first in the catch (49%; but with 28% dead), and Engraulidae 22%. Clupeidae also were abundant (11%), and Lessepsian (Etrumeus teres) and (Sargocentrum rubrum) larvae were reported from these waters for the first time. The important result of the present study is that pelagic fish sources in the area are dominant compared to the demersal fish species known previously.Keywords: Ichthyoplankton, fish, eggs and larvae, Northern Cyprus, Eastern Mediterranean. Piri Reis gemisiyle 300-1200 m derinliklerde toplanmış örnekler değerlendirilmiştir. Toplam 24 balık familyasına ait 73 yumurta ve 160 larva tanımlanmıştır.Bu familyalar Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Gonostomatidae, Sternoptychidae, Chloropthalmidae, Paralepididae, Synodontidae, Myctophidae, Holocentridae, Triglidae, Carangidae, Sparidae, Mullidae, Labridae, Gobiidae, Trichiuridae ve Soleidae'ye aittir. Derin deniz türleri arasında Myctophiformes (%29) ve Stomiiformes (%12) sırasıyla birinci ve ikinci sırada gelen en önemli grupları oluşturmuştur. Engraulidae larvaları tüm larval dağılım içerisinde %22'lik payla ikinci sıradadır. Hamsi yumurtaları %49'luk payla dağılımda birinci sırada olmakla beraber %28'i ölüdür. Clupeid türleri önemli yoğunluktadır (%11). Lesepsiyen Etrumeus teres, Sargocentrum rubrum larvaları bu sulardan ilk kez rapor edilmiştir. Pelajik balık kaynaklarının daha önceden bilinen demersal balıklara oranla alanda dominant oluşu bu çalışmanın önemli bir sonucudur.Anahtar Kelimeler: Ihtiyoplankton, balık, yumurta ve larva, Kuzey Kıbrıs, Doğu Akdeniz.

Two specimens of juvenile Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus, 1758) were caught off Urla coast in Izmir Bay, Aegean Sea by a commercial gillnet at the depth of 8 m. These juvenile tuna fishes are observed for the first time in Izmir Bay, even if the larger individuals are well-known in the area.
