Background: The aim of this short communication was to evaluate the quality and content of the Instagram posts about orthognathic surgery. Methods: Two hashtags #jawsurgery and #orthognathicsurgery were searched on Instagramin this retrospective Instagram post analysis study. Selected 100 posts for each hashtag were analyzed for type, total number of likes, comments, purpose and source. Results: Most of the posts about #jawsurgery were uploaded by patients (56.1%) who shared their personal experience. Most of the posts about #orthognathicsurgery also were uploaded by clinics (49.1%). Most of posts (39.6%) provided information about orthognathic surgery in #orthognaticsurgery. Posts generally involved by patient’s experience (49.1%), followed by patient information (28.1%), and advertisement (22.8%) in #jawsurgery. Conclusion: Patients should be educated by orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons about Instagram platform that it is not an adequate or accurate source of information about orthognathic surgery in its current form.
Objective The objective of this study was to determine the quality and content of orthodontic-related posts on Instagram. Materials and methods Eight orthodontic-related ‘hashtags’ were determined, and a total of 240 posts divided into 30 posts from each hashtag were investigated at two different time periods. Duplicate and unrelated posts were excluded from the study. Results A total of 227 Instagram posts (182 photographs, 45 videos) were analysed at two evaluation periods. The number of deleted Instagram posts was 13 and all were photographs. Most educational content was liked in the #orthodontics hashtag of the eight determined hashtags (p < 0.02). Most posts were shared for advertising purposes by other hashtags. Most posts were shared by dental professionals (152 posts). The group that shared the least number of posts were the dental companies (seven posts). Conclusions It was noted that Instagram is mainly used by dental professionals rather than for advertising purposes. Orthodontists should be aware of the content of social media platforms and educate and direct their patients towards correct and reliable Instagram resources.
Summary Background/Aim: Social media has become popular in recent years in dentistry. This study aims to evaluate the posts shared on Instagram related to accelerated orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods: The first 100 posts were selected for #acceleratedorthodontics and #speedbraces hashtags and analyzed. The type of posts, posts’ purpose, the source of posts, the number of likes and comments, the number of followers and followings of the users who uploaded the posts were recorded. Four posts in #speedbraces were irrelevant and the remaining 196 posts were evaluated. Results: The sources of the posts include 60 orthodontists, 20 dental pages, 9 dental clinics, 8 periodontologists, 3 surgeons in #acceleratedorthodontics hashtag. Also, 37 posts were preop-postopt, 34 of them were advertising, 14 of them were surgical information, 12 of them were professional information, and 3 of them were personal sharing in #acceleratedorthodontics hashtag. When the aims of the shares were evaluated, it was observed that 56 were for advertisement, 23 were for patient information, 7 were for entertainment, 6 were experience and 4 were preop-postop comparison in #speedbraces hashtag. Conclusions: The posts related to accelerated orthodontics on Instagram are insufficient in terms of the content. The patients should be guided to reach the correct sources of information by orthodontists.
Objectives: The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the effects of the menstrual cycle phases and aromatherapy on women's perception of orthodontic debonding pain. Materials and Methods: The materials of our study were consisted of randomly selected 48 female patients (mean age:19.00±3.40). Four different study groups were performed. LA+; the patients in the luteal phase and received aromatherapy(n=12), LA-; the patients in the luteal phase and did not receive aromatherapy(n=13), FA+; the patients in the follicular phase and received aromatherapy(n=11), FA-; the patients in the follicular phase and did not receive aromatherapy(n=12). Debonding was performed and the pain experience for each tooth was scored by the patient on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Also, participants' general responses to pain were assessed with the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). The aromatherapy protocol was to inhale lavender oil from approximately 30 cm for 3 minutes, 3 minutes before debonding. Results: It was found that the mean VAS scores were higher in the luteal phase than in the follicular phase, however this difference was not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups with and without aromatherapy in terms of VAS scores(P>0.05). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the quality of information uploaded onto the Internet regarding accelerated orthodontics. Materials and methods: The selected search terms 'accelerated orthodontics', 'rapid orthodontics', 'speed orthodontics', 'rapid braces', and 'speed braces' were searched by three commonly used search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing), and the URLs of the top 50 websites were recorded. The websites were evaluated using DISCERN, HONcode, and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark instruments. The readability of the websites was evaluated by the Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL). Results: The total mean DISCERN score (section 1 + section 2) for all websites was 29.50/75 (range: 15-68). The average FRES of all websites was 52.99 ± 31.91. Also, the average FKGL score of all websites was 10.73 ± 2.03. Professional health organisation websites had significantly higher DISCERN scores than other websites (p < 0.001). Only three websites had the HONcode seal. Professional organisation and private dental practice websites showed better compliance with JAMA benchmarks. There was no statistically significant difference related to FRES and FKGL scores between groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Information regarding accelerated orthodontics found on the Internet is insufficient. It is recommended that orthodontic societies and orthodontists increase the quality of the websites which describe accelerated orthodontics.
