Bending properties of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) lumber pieces were predicted using the stress wave method. The lumber samples were taken from 30-to 80-year-old red pine trees harvested from a southwest site in Turkey. MTG timber grader was utilized to predict modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) values of lumbers with 40 mm x 90 mm in cross section and 3 meters in length. Static MOE and MOR values of the lumber pieces were determined using a three-point bending test. The coefficient of determination between measured and predicted MOEs was 0.84 and that between dynamic MOE and bending strength was 0.69. However, the coefficient of determination between bending MOE and strength was only 0.45. It seems that dynamic MOE has better prediction capability for bending strength than static MOE. Effects of some variables such as log and visual grades on dynamic MOE values were also determined statistically. Natural frequency of the lumbers showed far more significant effects than other variables. It is apparent that the stress wave method has the potential to predict the bending properties of Turkish red pine lumber.

Multimedia sensors enable monitoring applications to obtain more accurate and detailed information. However, the development of efficient and lightweight solutions for managing data traffic over wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) has become vital because of the excessive volume of data produced by multimedia sensors. As part of this motivation, this paper proposes a fusion-based WMSN framework that reduces the amount of data to be transmitted over the network by intra-node processing. This framework explores three main issues: 1) the design of a wireless multimedia sensor (WMS) node to detect objects using machine learning techniques; 2) a method for increasing the accuracy while reducing the amount of information transmitted by the WMS nodes to the base station, and; 3) a new cluster-based routing algorithm for the WMSNs that consumes less power than the currently used algorithms. In this context, a WMS node is designed and implemented using commercially available components. In order to reduce the amount of information to be transmitted to the base station and thereby extend the lifetime of a WMSN, a method for detecting and classifying objects on three different layers has been developed. A new energy-efficient cluster-based routing algorithm is developed to transfer the collected information/data to the sink. The proposed framework and the cluster-based routing algorithm are applied to our WMS nodes and tested experimentally. The results of the experiments clearly demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed WMSN architecture in the real-world surveillance applications.

Aim The contribution of micronutrients to the immune system has been known for a long time. This study aimed to investigate the association between the micronutrient levels and hemogram values and prognostic factors of the disease in COVID‐19 patients in Ankara City Hospital. Materials and methods Our study is a descriptive observational study based on a retrospective review of patient files. COVID‐19 patients over 18 years of age who were admitted to our hospital between 14 March and 1 June 2020, and with a complete micronutrient profile were included in the study. Age, gender, chronic diseases, micronutrient concentrations in the last 6 months, hemogram data on the day of hospitalization, total length of stay in hospital, and hospitalization to Intensive Care Unit (ICU)‐intubation‐death status of the patients were obtained from the patient files. Results A total of 310 patients whose parameters were thoroughly examined were included in our study; 51.9% of them were men and the mean age of all patients was 57.02 ± 18.28 years, and the most common comorbid disease was hypertension. The percentage of patients who were followed in the ICU, were intubated, and died was 34.5%, 13.9%, and 9.4%, respectively. The mean length of hospital stay was 15.87 ± 12.79 days. Low folate, iron, vitamin D, and hemoglobin levels of the patients and high vitamin B12 concentration were more related to poor prognostic factors. The number of white blood cells was significantly higher in patients with a worse prognosis, and the number of lymphocytes was lower in patients with ICU admission but higher in intubated and dead patients. Conclusion Micronutrient and hemogram values, advanced age, being male, and having comorbid diseases were correlated with the poor prognosis of COVID‐19 infection. Deficiency of Iron, Folate, and vitamin D should be well‐considered in COVID‐19. Excessive vitamin B12 and multivitamin supplementation should be avoided by choosing supplement wisely. In addition, attention should be paid to leukocytosis, lymphocyte counts, and anemia during COVID‐19 patient follow‐up.
