The present article offers a broad reading of Derrida’s various writings on photographic art and technique, from the funeral oration he dedicated to Roland Barthes (1981) to the late, short essays that accompany Frédéric Brenner’s Diaspora. Terres natales de l’exil (2003). This essay tackles motifs related to matters of metonymy, of “dé/montage” as a de/limitation of representation, of truth, of the temporalities and spaces of development, and of the celebration and the ritual of photographic art. Derrida rarely makes use of ekphrasis at the expense of the photographs he is reading; rather, he writes in a “script of light,” with its complex referentiality and spectral returns, through deconstructive effects and affects, from within the fragile and vulnerable dwellings it illuminates: it is what sets apart Derrida’s interpretation of images and vision
The present article explores the relationship between writing and the image or, better yet: the very possibility of iconography. In our time, Jean-Luc Nancy has shown this possibility at work. Thus, this essay deals with his thoughts on the image. Each thinker embodies an opportunity of thought: there is nothing to “reconstruct,” no theory to clarify, explain or illustrate. Instead, we must reactivate thinking, recover its unexpressed potentiality or at the very least those potentialities expressed merely in terms of a determined totality, in terms of a specific voice’s chords. Jean-Luc Nancy’s work—especially the part of its “body” devoted to the image—does not depart from this rule. We therefore reread his writings on the image in light of art history and Panofsky’s iconological thought in order to outline the possibility of iconography as figurative thinking, as an ontology of the image: a practice of iconography capable of exposing itself to the very question of thought and of calling to account the meaning of thinking— thinking by means of images and through images
