We have identified the tomato I gene for resistance to the Fusarium wilt fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol) and show that it encodes a membrane-anchored leucine-rich repeat receptor-like protein (LRR-RLP). Unlike most other LRR-RLP genes involved in plant defence, the I gene is not a member of a gene cluster and contains introns in its coding sequence. The I gene encodes a loopout domain larger than those in most other LRR-RLPs, with a distinct composition rich in serine and threonine residues. The I protein also lacks a basic cytosolic domain. Instead, this domain is rich in aromatic residues that could form a second transmembrane domain. The I protein recognises the Fol Avr1 effector protein, but, unlike many other LRR-RLPs, recognition specificity is determined in the C-terminal half of the protein by polymorphic amino acid residues in the LRRs just preceding the loopout domain and in the loopout domain itself. Despite these differences, we show that I/Avr1-dependent necrosis in Nicotiana benthamiana depends on the LRR receptor-like kinases (RLKs) SERK3/BAK1 and SOBIR1. Sequence comparisons revealed that the I protein and other LRR-RLPs involved in plant defence all carry residues in their last LRR and C-terminal LRR capping domain that are conserved with SERK3/BAK1-interacting residues in the same relative positions in the LRR-RLKs BRI1 and PSKR1. Tyrosine mutations of two of these conserved residues, Q922 and T925, abolished I/Avr1-dependent necrosis in N. benthamiana, consistent with similar mutations in BRI1 and PSKR1 preventing their interaction with SERK3/BAK1.

Background: Poor early-life nutrition is a major barrier to good health and cognitive development, and is a global health priority. Alive & Thrive (A&T) was a multi-pronged initiative to improve infant and young child feeding behaviors. It aimed to achieve at-scale child health and nutrition improvements via a comprehensive approach that included nutrition counseling by health workers, policy change, social mobilization and mass media activities. This study evaluated the sustainability of activities introduced during A&T implementation (2009-2014) in Bangladesh and Vietnam. Methods: This was a mixed methods study that used a quasi-experimental design. Quantitative data (surveys with 668 health workers, and 269 service observations) were collected in 2017; and analysis compared outcomes (primarily dose and fidelity of activities, and capacity) in former A&T intervention areas versus areas that did not receive the full A&T intervention. Additionally, we conducted interviews and focus groups with 218 stakeholders to explore their impressions about the determinants of sustainability, based on a multi-level conceptual framework. Results: After program conclusion, stakeholders perceive declines in mass media campaigns, policy and advocacy activities, and social mobilization activitiesbut counseling activities were institutionalized and continued in both countries. Quantitative data show a persisting modest intervention effect: health workers in intervention areas had significantly higher child feeding knowledge, and in Bangladesh greater self-efficacy and job satisfaction, compared to their counterparts who did not receive the full package of A&T activities. While elements of the program were integrated into routine services, stakeholders noted dilution of the program focus due to competing priorities. Qualitative data suggest that some elements, such as training, monitoring, and evaluation, which were seen as essential to A&T's success, have declined in frequency, quality, coverage, or were eliminated altogether.

In this study, we tried to identify determinants of the credit risks at Vietnamese commercial banks. By applying the quantitative model using the unbalanced panel data of 20 banks in the period from 2006 to 2014, coupled with surveying the dependent variable, that is non-performing loan (NPL), in order to express the credit risks in business activities of commercial banks, the study has made conclusions on two groups of determinants that may have influence on the credit risks: (i) Bank-specific determinants and (ii) macro determinants. Specifically, the quantitative results showed that most correlations affirmed the accuracy of theory and relevant previous research findings, of which some notable results obtained by the author included: (i) For bank-specific determinants, the credit risks were highly inertia, requiring the continuous management of credit risks. Besides, the bank size and market share negatively influenced the credit risks of commercial banks due to adverse impacts on the readiness of acceptance of risks in business activities. In addition, the rapid credit expansion, ineffective capital use and credit control and management also caused future credit risks. (ii) For macro determinants, the estimated results reaffirmed the relationship between impacts of economic cycles though GDP growth and credit risks of commercial banks. (iii) Additionally, the study has not found any correlation between the effectiveness of general management, real lending interest rate and credit risks in business activities of Vietnamese commercial banks.
