Với tốc độ đô thị hóa và tăng trưởng kinh tế nhanh chóng ở Việt Nam, rất nhiều hoạt động xây dựng diễn ra khắp nơi, đặc biệt là tại các thành phố lớn như Hà Nội, Hải Phòng, và Hồ Chí Minh. Tất cả các hoạt động như xây mới, cải tạo, phá dỡ các tòa nhà và công trình tạo ra một lượng lớn phế thải, được gọi là phế thải xây dựng và phá dỡ (viết tắt là PTXD). Theo Báo cáo Môi trường Quốc gia năm 2011 về quản lý chất thải rắn do Bộ Tài nguyên và Môi trường ban hành, tổng lượng chất thải rắn đô thị trung bình khoảng 60 nghìn tấn/ngày, trong đó PTXD chiếm 10-12% tổng lượng chất thải rắn đô thị. Để tối đa hóa các tác động tích cực tiềm năng nhưng đồng thời để giảm thiểu các tác động tiêu cực của hiện đại hóa và công nghiệp hóa ở trong nước, cần phải có biện pháp kịp thời để bảo vệ môi trường. Bài viết này trình bày tình hình quản lý PTXD hiện tại ở Việt Nam và đưa ra những thách thức và khả năng tái chế PTXD. Giải pháp quan trọng được đề xuất là các chiến lược quản lý và tái chế PTXD phù hợp với các điều kiện này, với lợi ích đã được chứng minh cho tất cả các bên liên quan. Lượng phế thải xây dựng phát sinh hằng năm tại Việt Nam ngày một gia tăng, trong đó các loại bê tông thải chiếm tới 20-30%. Tỷ lệ tái chế và tái sử dụng thấp, chôn lấp chất thải là hình thức xử lý chất thải xây dựng phổ biến làm lãng phí rất nhiều diện tích, tài nguyên và có nguy cơ cao gây ô nhiễm môi trường nếu không quản lý và thực hiện đúng cách. Tại các quốc gia phát triển như Đức, Anh, Nhật,... phế thải xây dựng được tái chế, tái sử dụng với tỷ lệ trên 80% cho nhiều mục đích trong xây dựng và xử lý các vấn đề môi trường, trong đó có xử lý nước thải. Trong những năm gần đây, nhiều nghiên cứu về việc sử dụng các bê tông phế thải như là các vật liệu hấp phụ hiệu quả, các giá thể vi sinh thân thiện để xử lý các kim loại nặng, chất hữu cơ, chất dinh dưỡng trong nước thải đã được thực hiện. Bài báo này tổng quan các nghiên cứu về thành phần, tính chất của một số loại bê tông phế thải, cơ chế và hiệu quả loại bỏ các kim loại nặng, chất hữu cơ, chất dinh dưỡng trong nước thải, từ đó mở ra các hướng nghiên cứu, sử dụng phế thải xây dựng cho mục đích xử lý nước thải tại Việt Nam, đây hứa hẹn là hướng tiếp cận thân thiện, bền vững trong việc gia tăng việc tái sử dụng phế thải, giảm phát thải, giảm sử dụng nguyên liệu thô và hướng tới nền kinh tế tuần hoàn.
Bê tông khí chưng áp (AAC) là vật liệu rỗng xốp (độ rỗng tổng >70%), thành phần hóa học giàu canxi và các kim loại khác (Fe, Al, K, Mg). AAC cho thấy tiềm năng là chất hấp phụ hiệu quả các kim loại nặng (KLN) đặc biệt là Cadmi trong nước thải. Quá trình công nghiệp hóa trong ngành xây dựng và xu hướng giảm, không sử dụng các vật liệu nung truyền thống đã làm gia tăng quy mô sản xuất và sử dụng vật liệu AAC từ đó làm phát sinh hàng trăm nghìn mét khối AAC phế thải. Việc tái sử dụng chất thải AAC cho mục đích xử lý nước thải có ý nghĩa thực tiễn lớn khi giải quyết được bài toán quản lý chất thải rắn và xử lý KLN kiểm soát ô nhiễm môi trường nước. Trong nghiên cứu này, AAC đã được thử nghiệm như chất hấp phụ để loại bỏ Cd(II) ra khỏi nước thải. Các thí nghiệm hấp phụ tĩnh đã được thực hiện bằng cách sử dụng bê tông thải AAC với 2 kích cỡ khác nhau 3-5 mm và 5-10 mm để xử lý nước thải tổng hợp có nồng độ Cd(II) từ 0-5000 mg/L, trong các thời gian phản ứng khác nhau để đánh giá thời gian hấp phụ cân bằng và dung lượng hấp phụ cực đại của vật liệu. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã xác định được các thông số động học hấp phụ theo mô hình Langmuir và dung lượng hấp phụ Cd(II) của AAC lên đến 9,26 mg/g, từ đó chứng minh AAC có thể được sử dụng làm vật liệu hấp phụ chi phí thấp, hiệu quả, thân thiện, bền vững trong việc loại bỏ Cd(II) trong nước thải.
