likely to be consumed in response to positive affect. With regards to discrete emotions; stress, 10 depression, and sadness consistently elicited eating behaviours that fall outside of nutritional 11 recommendations (e.g., increased food intake, poor nutritional food choices). The role of 12 moderators including individual differences in dietary restraint and emotional eating, as well 13 as methodological considerations, such as means of eliciting and measuring emotions, may 14 account for equivocality with regards to some emotion and eating associations. The paper 15 concludes with recommendations for future research and implications for practice. 16 17
Emotions experienced before and during sports competition have been found to influence sports performance. Emotion regulation is defined as the automatic or deliberate use of strategies to initiate, maintain, modify or display emotions (Gross & Thompson, 2007) and is proposed to occur when a discrepancy exists between current and desired emotions. Two distinct motivations to regulate emotion - hedonic and instrumental (in short, for pleasure or for purpose) - have been proposed (Tamir, 2009). The instrumental approach might provide a more fruitful area of investigation for sports researchers as some athletes hold beliefs that supposedly pleasant emotions such as happiness and calmness associate with poor performance and supposedly unpleasant emotions such as anxiety and anger associate with good performance (Hanin, 2010). Athletes are more likely to try to regulate an emotion if they believe that doing so will facilitate performance. Strategies that encourage re-appraisal of factors that trigger emotions are proposed to be preferable. In this British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) expert statement, a summary of the key theoretical issues are offered leading to evidence-based recommendations for practitioners and researchers.
Relationships between self-efficacy, coping and retention among first-year undergraduate students were investigated. Qualitative methods were used to develop a self-efficacy measure assessing confidence to achieve those competencies required to successfully complete the first year of an undergraduate degree. One hundred and thirty-one first-year students completed a 40-item self-efficacy questionnaire and the MCOPE (Crocker & Graham, 1995) at the start of the academic year. Factor analysis indicated a coherent 5-factor model that described self-efficacy to manage time, use learning resources, work in groups, work well in lectures, and communicate. Results indicated that the coping strategies of planning and seeking social support for instrumental purposes significantly related to more than one self-efficacy factor and that self-efficacy scores taken at the start of the course could correctly classify 81.3% of students who subsequently withdrew. Findings lend insight into the association between strategies used to cope with environmental and interpersonal demands, and self-efficacy to cope with the demands of an undergraduate degree.
This study describes the development and validation of a brief self-report measure of emotional intelligence based on Salovey and Mayer’s (1990) conceptualization. In stage one, the 33-item Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS: Schutte et al., 1998 ) was assessed for content validity by a panel of experts. The panel deemed 17 items unsuitable for further analysis. In stage two, a theoretically derived 5-factor solution and a unidimensional model were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in a student-athlete sample (n = 955). Results supported the multidimensional solution. The Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale (BEIS-10) was developed by extracting the two items from each factor with the most salient factor loadings. CFA results yielded good fit indices for the 10-item, 5-factor solution. Finally, stage three provided evidence of test-retest stability for the BEIS-10 over a 2-week period in a sample of 111 student-athletes. The BEIS-10 is offered as a valid and reliable measurement tool that has particular utility in situations where brevity is important.
This study examined relationships between beliefs about emotions (meta-emotion beliefs), emotion regulation strategies, and pre-competition emotional states using an instrumental model of emotion regulation. Three hundred and sixty runners reported meta-beliefs about the influence of anxiety and/or anger on performance, completed a short emotion scale, and reported their use of emotion regulation strategies. Results indicated that 55 runners (15%) reported meta-emotion beliefs that strategies aimed at increasing anxiety and/or anger would help performance while 305 runners (85%) reported beliefs that strategies intended to reduce the same emotions before competition would help performance. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated that people who believe that anxiety or anger is good for performance reported high anger, but not anxiety, before performance. They also reported using strategies to increase unpleasant emotions. We suggest that further research is needed to examine relationships between meta-emotion beliefs and the use of emotion regulation strategies in sport.
