Summary Endometritis in cattle from the clinical, pathological and histological angle The endometrium in 30 selected cows was examined pathologically and histologically and the findings compared with the clinical history. Animals with endometritis, control cows and cows with so‐called asymptomatic infertility were included. The macroscopic findings, based on endometrial hyperaemia, gave useful results but they differed in many instances from the clinical diagnostic findings. The histological findings are described on the basis of various criteria. Mild pathological changes which could be classed as either normal or slightly pathological give rise to particular discussion in relation to conception and pregnancy. Diagnosis of endometritis clinically is least satisfactory in such “problem” cases; infertile cows with no clinical findings often show histologically a diseased endometrium. Repeated biopsies are necessary to clear up such cases. For this purpose biopsies from both right and left uterine horns are recommended.
