A new strategy for efficient in vivo image-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been demonstrated utilizing a ligand-exchange constructed upconversion-C60 nanophotosensitizer. This theranostic platform is superior to the currently reported nanophotosensitizers in (i) directly bonding photosensitizer C60 to the surface of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) by a smart ligand-exchange strategy, which greatly shortened the energy transfer distance and enhanced the (1)O2 production, resulting in the improvement of the therapeutic effect; (ii) realizing in vivo NIR 808 nm image-guided PDT with both excitation (980 nm) and emission (808 nm) light falling in the biological window of tissues, which minimized auto-fluorescence, reduced light scatting and improved the imaging contrast and depth, and thus guaranteed noninvasive diagnostic accuracy. In vivo and ex vivo tests demonstrated its favorable bio-distribution, tumor-selectivity and high therapeutic efficacy. Owing to the effective ligand exchange strategy and the excellent intrinsic photophysical properties of C60, (1)O2 production yield was improved, suggesting that a low 980 nm irradiation dosage (351 J cm(-2)) and a short treatment time (15 min) were sufficient to perform NIR (980 nm) to NIR (808 nm) image-guided PDT. Our work enriches the understanding of UCNP-based PDT nanophotosensitizers and highlights their potential use in future NIR image-guided noninvasive deep cancer therapy.
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), characterized by irreversible airflow limitation, is a highly prevalent lung disease worldwide and imposes increasing disease burdens globally. Emphysema is one of the primary pathological features contributing to the irreversible decline of pulmonary function in COPD patients, but the pathogenetic mechanisms remain unclear. Reticulocalbin 3 (Rcn3) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) lumen protein localized in the secretory pathway of living cells. Rcn3 in type II alveolar epithelial cell (AECIIs) has been reported to play a critical role in regulating perinatal lung development and bleomycin-induced lung injury-repair processes. We hypothesized that Rcn3 deficiency is associated with the development of emphysema during COPD, which is associated with the dysfunction of injury-repair modulated by alveolar epithelial cells. Materials and Methods: We examined Rcn3 expression in lung specimens from COPD patients and non-COPD control patients undergoing lung lobectomy or pneumonectomy. Two mouse models of emphysema were established by cigarette smoke (CS) exposure and intratracheal instillation of porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE). Rcn3 expression was detected in the lung tissues from these mice. Furthermore, conditional knockout (CKO) mice with Rcn3 deletion specific to AECIIs were used to explore the role of Rcn3 in PPE-induced emphysema progression. Rcn3 protein expression in lung tissues was evaluated by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Rcn3 mRNA expression in lung tissues was detected by qPCR. Results: Rcn3 expression was significantly increased in the lung specimens from COPD patients versus non-COPD patients and the level of Rcn3 increase was associated with the degree of emphysema. Rcn3 expression were also significantly up-regulated in both CSinduced and PPE-induced emphysematous mouse lungs. Moreover, the selective ablation of Rcn3 in AECIIs significantly alleviated severity of the mouse emphysema in response to intratracheal installation of PPE. Conclusion: Our data, for the first time, indicated that suppression of Rcn3 expression in AECIIs has a beneficial effect on PPE-induced emphysema.

The Internet of Things accelerates the development of RFID technology. Logistics, transportation, aviation and other fields has increasingly high demand on the reader's identification distance and reliability. In order to meet the market demand, the design of RFID reader based on the dual-mode was proposed. One is 915MHz radio frequency identification mode. The other is 2.4GHz active radio frequency identification mode, which has lower transmission power requirement and farther valid identification distance. An ARM9 microcontroller is used as the main controller of the RFID reader. The design includes communicate with PC, control dual-mode RFID reader, control the reader to write and read tags and the study of anti-collision algorithm. In the testing of the system, it achieved to identify further. The performance is achieved and reliable.
