D-amino acids (D-AAs) have various biological activities, such as activation of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor as a co-agonist by D-Ser. Since several free D-AAs are released in the broth monocultured with bacterium and D-AAs are probably utilized for bacterial communication, we presume that intestinal microbiota releases several kinds of free D-AAs, which may be involved in the hosts’ health. However, presently, only four free D-AAs have been found in the ceacal lumen, but not in the colonic lumen. Here, we showed, by simultaneous analysis of chiral AAs using high-sensitivity liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), that 12 free D-AAs (D-Ala, D-Arg, D-Asp, D-Gln, D-Glu, D-allo-Ile, D-Leu, D-Lys, D-Met, D-Phe, D-Ser, and D-Trp) are produced by intestinal microbiota and identified bacterial groups belonging to Firmicutes as the relevant bacterial candidates.

Although Asians are generally less obese than Caucasians, the prevalence of the MS was high among Japanese patients with OSA, and even among non-obese patients, OSA was associated with risk factors for the MS.

The hydrogenation of aliphatic nitriles over Pd/C, Pd/Al2O3, and Pd−Au/Al2O3 catalysts were evaluated for the selective hydrogenation of aliphatic nitriles to the corresponding primary amines. The highest selectivity (>99%) toward primary amines was achieved when the reaction was carried out in acetic acid using 10 mol% of 25% Pd‐5% Au/Al2O3 under relatively low hydrogen pressure (0.8 MPa). Characterization of the catalysts by XRD, CO adsorption experiments, and EXAFS revealed that the excellent selectivity of 25% Pd‐5% Au/Al2O3 toward the synthesis of primary amines is determined by the electronic properties and/or the surface structure resulting from alloying Pd with Au.magnified image

Optimal CPAP was more accurately predicted by combining a cephalometric parameter with BMI and polysomnographic data in Japanese patients with OSA, suggesting that craniofacial structure may be important in the pathogenesis of OSA syndrome among Asians.

A Lewis-acid-catalyzed method for the substrate-directed formation of peptide bonds has been developed, and this powerful approach is utilized for the new "remote" activation of carboxyl groups under solvent-free conditions. The presented method has the following advantages: (1) the high-yielding peptide synthesis uses a tantalum catalyst for any amino acids; (2) the reaction proceeds without any racemization; (3) the new substrate-directed chemical ligation using the titanium catalyst is applicable to convergent peptide synthesis. These advantages overcome some of the unresolved problems in classical peptide synthesis.

In the presence of palladium on carbon (Pd/C) as a catalyst, hydrogenation of aliphatic nitriles in cyclohexane efficiently proceeded at 25-60 °C under ordinary hydrogen gas pressure to afford the corresponding tertiary amines. However, the use of rhodium on carbon (Rh/C) led to the highly selective generation of secondary amines. Hydrogenation of aromatic nitriles and cyclohexanecarbonitrile selectively produced secondary amines in the presence of either Pd/C or Rh/C.
