Jedną z najbardziej charakterystycznych cech Słowiń-skiego Parku Narodowego (SPN) są wydmy i mierzeje -wąskie pasy ziemi oddzielające jeziora od morza (w obrębie SPN: Gardno, Dołgie Małe, Dołgie Wielkie, Łebsko), na których wydmy są podstawowymi elementami krajobrazu (Ostrowski i Symonides, 1994). Do najcenniejszych należą Mierzeja Gardnieńska (zwana też Gardeńską) i Mierzeja Łebska. Dzięki unikalnym wartościom zostały wytypowane do Czerwonej Księgi Krajobrazu Polski jako obszar wydmowo-leśny z najrozleglejszymi w Europie polami ruchomych wydm (500 ha) o wysokości ponad 40 m (Baranowska-Janota i in., 2004). Obszar ten porastają w większości bory sosnowe, w których, oprócz dominującej sosny zwyczajnej (Pinus sylvestris L.), są spotykane inne obce geograficznie gatunki z rodzaju Pinus, świadczące o wpływie człowieka na rozwój szaty roślinnej w tym regionie. Nie umniejsza to jednak roli przyrodniczej tych lasów, a także ich znaczenia w stabilizacji wydm. Z tego punktu widzenia istotne byłoby zapewnienie trwałości lasu. W obszarach objętych ochroną ścisłą może ona oznaczać tylko naturalną przemianę pokoleń, w której dożywający naturalnej śmierci drzewostan ustępuje miejsca młodej generacji. Problemem drzewostanów Mierzei Gardnieńsko-Łebskiej jest jednak brak młodego pokolenia drzew w drzewostanach dojrzałych, w których pokolenie to powinno już występować. Dlatego w 2015 roku
Na 23 powierzchniach badawczych Słowińskiego Parku Narodowego badano rozmieszczenie korzeni trzech gatunków drzew-Fagus sylvatica, Pinus sylvestris i P. ×rhaetica-w glebach wykształconych z piasków wydmowych. Wykazano, że sosna zwyczajna zdecydowanie częściej niż pozostałe gatunki lokuje korzenie w warstwie gleby do głębokości 10 cm. Ma też większy udział korzeni o grubości ponad 4 cm i sięga nimi głębiej. Kosodrzewina wykształca głównie korzenie poniżej 1 cm grubości i korzeni się płytko (do 30 cm). Buk wykorzystuje przestrzeń gleby w sposób najbardziej równomierny wśród badanych gatunków, wykazując mniejszy udział korzeni w warstwach 0-10 cm oraz 11-20 cm, ale przewyższa udziałem procentowym sosnę zwyczajną i kosodrzewinę w warstwach 21-30 cm, 31-40 cm oraz 41-50 cm.
