Congestion extends the time of the journey for both people and goods. Therefore, transport solutions should be optimized. Management scientists and technical scientists worked together in order to develop a proprietary solution to increase efficiency in terms of productivity improvements for intelligent transport systems. The most fundamental functions of management have been paired with a detailed analysis of city traffic. The authors developed a method for determining the order of vehicles at traffic lights and connected it with vehicle-to-vehicle communication and GPS signals. As a result, a novel method to increase the throughput of intersections is presented. This solution generates a sound signal in order to inform the driver that the preceding car has started moving forward. The proposed solution leads to the shortening of the reaction time of the drivers waiting in a queue. This situation is most common at red lights. Consequently, the traffic simulation shows that the discharge of queues at traffic lights may be quicker by up to 13.5%. Notably, that proposed solution does not require any modification of the infrastructure as well as any additional devices for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication at the road intersections. To conclude, proper implementation of the proposed solution will certainly contribute to efficiency improvements within intelligent transport systems, with the potential to reduce traffic jams.
It is well known that in a turbulent world (full of processed information), information has a particularly high value. Wide access to technology makes the data transformation and transmission processes faster and more vulnerable to leaks and unauthorized access. This publication discusses the concept of information security management based on a development of a machine called documentomat. It is the machine built to automatically release documents with regard to high security standards. The entire flow of the documents in the company has been presented and the formalized process of decision-making to develop and finally build above-mentioned machine was described. The problems and doubts raised during the machine building process were presented along with the solutions adopted. The device has been designed, constructed, and programmed within the resources of one micro-sized limited liability company in Europe. Thus, it is the solution working in a real world that may find application in many similar companies, not the theoretical concept only. The final result exceeded the expectations of the project team, leading to strengthening of the competitive position of the company. This occurred through the following aspects: adding significant advantage to its offer, which is the ability to release the documents at any time with regard to high security standards. Moreover, the long-term level of costs of such a solution seems to be very low. During the one year of operation period, two malfunctions took place, each was repaired in just 3 h (repair and improvement, labor only, no spare parts needed). Any further maintenance, repair, or development can be done at very affordable prices, at non-available on the market labor cost, which will potentially further strengthen the impact of the solution on the competitiveness of the company. Improvement in terms of competitiveness of the company and data safety has been gained. The success of this project proves that, in some cases, it is worth to develop the necessary solution within the resources of the company rather than buying one from an external enterprise.
In general, the production processes are more and more complex. This is the result of more and more sophisticated materials used, the pressure to save them as well as other production resources (ecological perspective), also the tendency to buy mobile products lighter and less power consuming than before. In previous years using highly specialized technology was very costly for the company. Nowadays, this situation is possible to be changed because of emerging types of modern micro-controllers and variety of compatible sensors. Some of those micro-controllers are more power saving, some are more powerful in terms of computing power. The common denominator is that both purchasing them as well as programming is possible for ordinary person, a hobbyist building DIY projects. This sheds new light to the professional usage of modern micro-controllers-based solutions that can become possible to offer comparable level of precision at the fraction of cost. The authors recognized the strong potential in modern micro-controllers and made the research among professionals in the area of production companies. The outcome of research showed that the professionals share the opinion of the authors. Therefore, the outbreak of usage of such inexpensive solutions in professional applications is expected. However, the research showed, that there is possible to find single situations, where usage of modern micro-controllers may be limited, for example in the company targeted to produce hand-made products or handicraft (manufacture).
