In this review we discuss the present state of knowledge in the chemistry of substances of Commiphora spp. General On this place we must mention the most known Commiphoras, namely Commiphora myrrha (Nees) Engl., true myrrh, officinal myrrh, Heera Bol tree; C. myrrha (Nees) Engler var molmol Engler (C. molmol Engl. ex Tschirch), Somalian myrrh; Commiphora abyssinica (Berg) Engler (syn. Commiphora madagascarensis Jacq.), Arabian myrrh, Abyssinian myrrh; Commiphora africana (A. Rich.) Engl., myrrh, African bdelium; Commiphora guidottii Chiov., sweet myrrh, habag-hady (name in Somalia);
Plastic waste disposal is a huge ecotechnological problem and one of the approaches to solving this problem is the development of biodegradable plastics. This review summarizes data on their use, biodegradability, commercial reliability and production from renewable resources. Some commercially successful biodegradable plastics are based on chemical synthesis (i.e. polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, polycaprolactone, and polyvinyl alcohol). Others are products of microbial fermentations (i.e. polyesters and neutral polysaccharides) or are prepared from chemically modified natural products (e.g., starch, cellulose, chitin or soy protein).
Melting snow fields populated by aplanozygotes of the genus Chloromonas (Chlamydomonadales, Chlorophyta) are found in polar and alpine habitats. In the High Tatra Mountains (Slovakia), cells causing blooms of brownish–red snow designated as Scotiella tatrae kol turned out to be genetically (18S, ITS1 and ITS2 rDNA, rbcL) very closely related to Chloromonas nivalis (Chodat) Hoham et Mullet from the Austrian Alps. Therefore, Sc. tatrae is transferred into the latter taxon and reduced to a subspecies as Cr. nivalis subsp. tatrae. Both exhibit a similar photosynthetic performance, thrive in similar habitats at open sites above timberline, but differ in astaxanthin accumulation and number of aplanozygote cell wall flanges. In a field sample of Cr. nivalis subsp. tatrae, polyunsaturated fatty acids formed nearly 50 % of total lipids, dominating in phospholipids and glycolipids. Cr. nivalis subsp. tatrae represents likely a variation of a common cryoflora species with distinct morphology.
A large number of antibiotics are glycosides. In numerous cases the glycosidic residues are crucial to their activity; sometimes, glycosylation only improves their pharmacokinetic parameters. Recent developments in molecular glycobiology have improved our understanding of aglycone vs. glycoside activities and made it possible to develop new, more active or more effective glycodrugs based on these findings - a very illustrative recent example is vancomycin. The majority of attention has been devoted to glycosidic antibiotics including their past, present, and probably future position in antimicrobial therapy. The role of the glycosidic residue in the biological activity of glycosidic antibiotics, and the attendant targeting and antibiotic selectivity mediated by glycone and aglycone in antibiotics some antitumor agents is discussed here in detail. Chemical and enzymatic modifications of aglycones in antibiotics, including their synthesis, are demonstrated on various examples, with particular emphasis on the role of specific and mutant glycosyltransferases and glycorandomization in the preparation of these compounds. The last section of this review describes and explains the interactions of the glycone moiety of the antibiotics with DNA and especially the design and structure-activity relationship of glycosidic antibiotics, including their classification based on their aglycone and glycosidic moiety. The new enzymatic methodology 'glycorandomization' enabled the preparation of glycoside libraries and opened up new ways to prepare optimized or entirely novel glycoside antibiotics.
