This study investigated the heritability of auditory processing impairment, as assessed by Tallal's Auditory Repetition Test (ART). The sample consisted of 37 same-sex twin pairs who had previously been selected because one or both twins met criteria for language impairment (LI) and 104 same-sex twin pairs in the same age range (7 to 13 years) from the general population. These samples yielded 55 children who met criteria for LI, who were compared with 76 children whose language was normal for their age (LN group). We replicated earlier work showing that group LI is impaired relative to group LN on ART. However, there was no evidence of a heritable influence on ART scores: Correlations between twins and their co-twins were reasonably high for both MZ and DZ twins, suggesting that performance is more influenced by shared environment than genetic factors. Analyses of extreme scores gave a similar picture of nonsignificant group heritability. In contrast, a test of phonological short-term memory, the Children's Nonword Repetition Test (CNRep), gave high estimates of group heritability. In general, CNRep was a better predictor of low language test scores than ART, but ART did make a significant independent contribution in accounting for variance in a test of grammatical understanding.

A survey of the incidence and prevalence of non‐melanocytic skin cancer in Geraldton, Western Australia, was undertaken in November 1987. All residents aged 40 to 64 years whose names were on the electoral roll on August 1, 1987 were invited to undergo a whole‐body skin examination by a dermatologist. When a skin cancer was suspected, participants were referred for treatment to their usual medical practitioner. Subjects were asked to recall incident skin cancers over the preceding two years, and medical records were searched for confirmatory evidence. Histological confirmation of all lesions, both prevalent and incident, was sought and sections were obtained for a standardized review. The prevalence of confirmed non‐melanocytic skin cancer in those aged 40 to 64 years was 7.0% in men and 4.7% in women. The prevalence of basal‐cell carcinoma (BCO was 6.5% in men and 4.5% in women while the prevalence of squamous‐cell carcinoma (SCO was 1.2% in men and 0.3% in women. The estimated incidence rate of non‐melanocytic skin cancer in this age group was 1560 per 100 000 person‐years. The estimated incidence rate of BCC in men was 1335 per 100 000 person‐years, and in women 817 per 100 000, while in men the estimated incidence rate of SCC was 890 per 100 000 person‐years, and in women it was 289 per 100 000 person‐years.

This consensus document combines the available literature regarding the management of multifocally recurrent or metastastic RPS with the practical expertise of high-volume sarcoma centers from multiple countries. It is designed as a tool for decision making in the complex multidisciplinary management of this condition and is expected to standardize management across centers, thereby ensuring that patients receive the highest quality care.

An 87-year-old woman with eruptive keratoacanthomas complicating recent imiquimod therapy is presented. Lesions developed both at and distal to the treatment site. She responded well to 8 weeks of oral acitretin with resolution of most lesions and no recurrence at 6 months post treatment. A remaining lesion was excised and found to be a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Keratoacanthoma and squamous cell carcinoma should be considered in any patient developing rapidly growing keratotic nodules in association with recent imiquimod therapy. The aetiology and treatment of eruptive keratoacanthomas is briefly discussed.

Purpose -The purpose of this article is to describe the development of Rapid, a successful document supply system in the USA. Design/methodology/approach -The paper provides a descriptive analysis. Findings -Finds that Rapid reduces costs and speeds up the fulfillment of document supply requests by using a well integrated system that precisely identifies holdings statements of participating libraries. Originality/value -Gives a good insight into the workings of a cooperative document supply system in the USA with possible applications in other countries.
