We explore the effects of thin films on the hydrodynamics of macroscopic fluid bodies spreading over solid surfaces. To examine these effects, we measure the interface shape within microns of moving contact lines and compare those measurements to two asymptotic models in the limit of small capillary number, Ca. One model requires that the films affect the hydrodynamics only in a microscopic region near the contact line and allows the macroscopic meniscus to exhibit a nonzero effective contact angle. The other model describes the film as containing mobile fluid and specifically models the flow as fluid moves into or out of the film as the contact line moves. We examine fluids advancing and receding on wetting and nonwetting surfaces with spontaneously forming (molecular scale) and pre-existing (micron scale) films. Our results emphasize the importance of the mobility of the molecules in these very thin films in determining the hydrodynamics governing the moving contact line. The first model, which describes fluids advancing over dry surfaces, also accounts for the hydrodynamics of liquids advancing over very thin, immobile films. Surprisingly, the same model fails when fluid recedes on a nonwetting surface and no film is present. For mobile pre-existing films, the second model, based on Landau and Levich’s theory, accounts for the hydrodynamics in the limit of small Ca.
The magnetic properties of CrPt 3 L1 2 ferrimagnetic thin films have been studied. Films were produced by sputtering multilayers of Cr and Pt onto silicon nitride coated silicon substrates. The as-deposited films are nonmagnetic. An anneal at ϳ800°C results in ferrimagnetic behavior with a perpendicular easy-axis. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy ͑TEM͒ measurements show that ͑111͒ CrPt 3 is the only crystalline phase present after annealing. Rocking curves with a full width at half maximum as low as 1.8°indicate good crystallographic orientation. Magnetic properties of the films vary with composition, annealing temperature and time, layer thickness, and sputtering conditions. The films exhibit large coercivities, H c , that can be tuned in the range 1500-8000 Oe. Saturation magnetization, M s , is typically 150-200 emu/cc. Squarenesses, S, as high as 0.99 have been found. A uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant, K u , of up to 8ϫ10 6 erg/cc was achieved. TEM micrographs show a 35 nm average grain size and complete interdiffusion of the Cr and Pt. Magneto-optical hysteresis loops at 632.8 nm wavelength reveal Kerr rotations of about 0.21°when the films are overcoated with a quarter-wavelength dielectric.
We have performed longitudinal and perpendicular magnetic recording measurements using a contact write/read tester, which scans a magnetic recording head in contact with the recording media. Our tester has a demonstrated positioning resolution of 5 nm. Perpendicular transitions in the range 125-425 kfci were recorded on double-layer perpendicular media with a high moment soft underlayer. The perpendicular bits were imaged using both a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) read head on the contact tester and using magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Longitudinal bit transitions with linear densities in the range 25 to 725 kfci were recorded, and the signal-to-noise ratios of both the perpendicular and longitudinal systems were measured.
