Ziel: Untersucht wurden die klinische Relevanz und das Risiko der Ubertragung von Parvovirus B19 (B19) durch Blut oder Plasmaprodukte. Maßnahmen zur Vermeidung dieser Ubertragung wurden diskutiert. Quellen und Auswahlkriterien: Publizierte physikalisch-chemische Daten der autonomen Parvoviren sowie Literaturangaben zur Inzidenz von B19-kontaminierten Blut- und Plasmaspenden wurden zusammengefaßt. Forschungsergebnisse des Autors und anderer Untersucher wurden berücksichtigt. Ergebnisse: B19 tritt in Deutschland endemisch auf. Die Inzidenz viruskontaminierter Blutspenden beträgt 0,01-0,03%. Trotz Anwendung virusinaktivierender Verfahren kann die Ubertragung von B19 durch Gerinnungsfaktorpräparate derzeit nicht ausgeschlossen werden. Schlußfolgerung: Die Ubertragung von B19 durch Blut oder Plasmaprodukte läßt sich durch die Testung der Einzelspenden auf B19-spezifische Antikörper mit Hilfe von Enzymimmunoassays oder auf B19-DNS mit der Polymerase-Kettenreaktion vermeiden.
