irtual fitness programs increased during the pandemic and will probably continue to be popular. Many safety and legal liability issues need to be addressed when designing and delivering virtual fitness programsboth live/ online and on demand. Part 1 of this article focuses on these issues for live/online programs. Safety and legal liability issues for on-demand programs will be described in part 2 as well as a summary of statutory laws that apply to both types of virtual programs. Live/online programs, as well as traditional (or inperson) programs, involve a real-time, instructor-participant relationship (i.e., synchronous instruction). On-demand programs, in which participants access prerecorded workouts on their own time, do not involve a real-time, instructor-participant relationship (i.e., asynchronous instruction).
