This article reviews recent literature on low-income fathers, including the transition to fatherhood for young unmarried fathers and levels of father involvement among married, cohabiting, and nonresident low-income fathers. I discuss predictors of father involvement as well as available evidence concerning their effects on children's well-being. Although mounting qualitative evidence argues that unmarried low-income men may be more favorably disposed to fatherhood than previously recognized and that such intentions may greatly influence subsequent fathering behavior, studies of fertility intention remain largely separate from those of father involvement. I propose that subsequent research should also pay greater attention to the effects of fatherhood on low-income men.
Purpose Examine fathers’ perceived reasons for their lack of inclusion in pediatric research and strategies to increase their participation. Description We conducted expert interviews with researchers and practitioners (N = 13) working with fathers to inform the development of an online survey. The survey—which measured fathers’ perceived reasons for their underrepresentation in pediatric research, recommended recruitment venues, and research personnel and study characteristics valued by fathers—was distributed online and in-person to fathers. Assessment Respondents included 303 fathers. Over 80 % of respondents reported that fathers are underrepresented in pediatric research because they have not been asked to participate. Frequently recommended recruitment venues included community sports events (52 %), social service programs (48 %) and the internet (60 %). Compared with white fathers, more non-white fathers recommended public transit (19 % vs. 10 %, p = .02), playgrounds (16 % vs. 6 %, p = .007) and barber shops (34 % vs. 14 %, p <.0001) and fewer recommended doctors’ offices (31 % vs. 43 %, p = .046) as recruitment venues. Compared with residential fathers (100 % resident with the target child), more non-residential fathers recommended social services programs (45 % vs. 63 %, p = .03) and public transit (10 % vs. 27 %, p = .001) and fewer recommended the workplace (17 % vs. 40 %, p = .002) as recruitment venues. Study brevity, perceived benefits for fathers and their families, and the credibility of the lead organization were valued by fathers. Conclusion Fathers’ participation in pediatric research may increase if researchers explicitly invite father to participate, target father-focused recruitment venues, clearly communicate the benefits of the research for fathers and their families and adopt streamlined study procedures.
The quinquedentate macrocyclic ligand cyclo-6,6'-[1,9-(2,5,8-trithianonane)]-2,2'-bipyridine ([15]aneS3bpy = L), containing two pyridyl nitrogens and three thiaether sulfurs as donor atoms, has been synthesized and complexed with copper. The CuII/IL redox potential, the stabilities of the oxidized and reduced complex, and the oxidation and reduction electron-transfer kinetics of the complex reacting with a series of six counter reagents have been studied in acetonitrile at 25 degrees C, mu = 0.10 M (NaClO4). The Marcus cross relationship has been applied to the rate constants obtained for the reactions with each of the six counter reagents to permit the evaluation of the electron self-exchange rate constant, k11. The latter value has also been determined independently from NMR line-broadening experiments. The cumulative data are consistent with a value of k11 = 1 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1), ranking this among the fastest-reacting CuII/I systems, on a par with the blue copper proteins known as cupredoxins. The resolved crystal structures show that the geometry of the CuIIL and CuIL complexes are nearly identical, both exhibiting a five-coordinate square pyramidal geometry with the central sulfur donor atom occupying the apical site. The most notable geometric difference is a puckering of an ethylene bridge between two sulfur donor atoms in the CuIL complex. Theoretical calculations suggest that the reorganizational energy is relatively small, with the transition-state geometry more closely approximating the geometry of the CuIIL ground state. The combination of a nearly constant geometry and a large self-exchange rate constant implies that this CuII/I redox system represents a true geometric "entatic state."
Over the past several decades, nonmarital childbearing rates have risen sharply, especially among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Recent research suggests that disadvantaged Americans may defer or delay marriage in part because of perceived economic barriers. Yet, childbearing is also costly. Few studies have examined low-income parents' motivations for having children in a context of socioeconomic disadvantage. This study deploys qualitative data drawn from repeated, in-depth interviews with a heterogeneous sample of low-income, noncustodial fathers ( N = 171) in which men describe in rich detail the circumstances surrounding the conceptions of each of their children and characterize their fertility intentions. The authors find that “planned” and “unplanned” pregnancies are at either end of a continuum of intentionality and that the vast majority of pregnancies are in intermediate categories along that continuum.
