The increased risk of fracture in alcoholics is in part due to their increased risk of trauma, but a generalised skeletal disease may also occur in alcoholics. The exact nature and prevalence of alcohol-related bone disease is unknown. The pathogenesis is likely to be multifactorial and related to nutritional problems, endocrine and metabolic effects and possible direct effects of alcohol.
