High-cycle fatigue behaviour of reinforcing steel under the effect of ongoing corrosionThis paper presents the results of the corrosion fatigue behaviour of profiled reinforcing steel bars. Cyclically loaded rebar was simultaneously exposed to different corrosive environments -moderate to severe corrosive environments simulating XC or XD/XS exposure. Corrosion was configured naturally without any external polarization. Rebar was exposed to the corrosive solutions either directly or, when embedded in concrete, indirectly. In this latter case, corrosive agents penetrated towards the steel surface through an open crack. Low frequency was applied to enable extended corrosion periods. The potential drop method was utilized to detect and quantify the crack initiation and crack growth of the rebar. Using this method it was possible to determine the ratios between the number of cycles to crack initiation and the cycles to failure. Based on this method, the N ini /N F ratios were almost always between 0.8 and 0.9 -values that are similar to ratios determined for rebar tested in air (reference). This indicates that the fatigue life of rebar in carbonated concrete or concrete containing chloride is strongly dependent on crack initiation and less on crack growth. The S-N curves derived from the corrosion fatigue tests deviate significantly from the curve that was measured during the reference fatigue tests (tests in air). The S-N curves of rebar tested under corrosion fatigue load were linear, with a slope that was much steeper than the slope of the reference rebar tested in air.
Schlüsselwörter: Betonstahl / Ermüdung / Korrosion /In the 2001 completely revised version of DIN 1045-1 for the first time an explicit proof against fatigue, more a fatigue analysis, have been published. A limit on the fatigue strength at two million cycles, as it was formerly common in civil engineering, is no longer in use. The influence of corrosion on the fatigue behaviour has been investigated insufficiently. It is thus not satisfyingly clarified. To fill this gap of knowledge, a research program was launched, in which fatigue tests at steel samples with a diameter of 16 mm were performed under going corrosion. The fatigue behaviour of the reinforcing steel was determined for four different corrosive media. The aim of the investiagtions was to show that the SN lines, which are the result of the fatigue tests, have exposure caused very different patterns. On the other hand it is examined, whether crack initiation and crack growth of the steel specimen can be recorded separately from each other. Therefore, different testing methods for crack detection were used. They differ especially with respect to their methodology. The article briefly describes the use of the testing methods for crack detection, explains the fatigue tests with the different corrosive liquids and discusses the test results.
Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in the United States is stored onsite at the commercial reactors where it is generated. The dry storage systems consist of welded 304/316 stainless steel canisters enclosed in passively-ventilated concrete overpacks. The ambient cooling air comes from the surrounding environment and contains typical atmospheric aerosols, including chloride-rich salts (e.g. Cl-), which accumulate on the storage canister surface over time. When the canister surface cools sufficiently, surface salts can absorb water from the air and form corrosive surface electrolyte droplets. Over time, these droplets may interact with weld regions that have susceptible microstructures and high through-thickness tensile stresses to promote stress corrosion cracking (SCC). A study is underway to understand atmospheric corrosion mechanisms and morphology that leads to SCC initiation on metals currently used for SNF dry storage canisters and on other corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA) that could be used for future storage. Austenitic SS304H (both annealed and sensitized), PH13-8 Mo SS, and Ni-based Alloy 600 corrosion test coupons have been coated with finely disseminated synthetic sea salt deposits using an ink-jet printer, simulating deposition of naturally occurring sea-salt aerosols, and exposed to expected atmospheric conditions with the aim of studying the resulting corrosion morphology, surface electrolyte chemistry, and SCC crack initiation behavior. Corrosion morphology (pit size distribution, pit number density, and shape) will be characterized as a function of salt surface load density, relative humidity, temperature, and exposure time using optical profilometry, FIB-SEM, microXCT, and robomet (a robotic cross-sectional metallographic examination technique). The surface electrolyte and corrosion products will be characterized by SEM-EDS, TOF-SIMS, and microRaman spectroscopy. Identical salt loading and atmospheric conditions will be applied to dog-bone style tensile samples used for SCC studies where intermittent high R ripple-style fatigue loading will be applied to mark the progression of fracture after crack initiation has occurred. These marks on the fracture surface will be used to identify the critical crack initiating features. Ultimately, the results of this study will be used for modeling initiatives aimed at designing new CRA alloys for next generation SNF tanks and to aid in lifetime assessments for current SNF temporary storage canisters.
