There are significant economic, environmental, social, and marketing issues that exist from the supply-side perspective in response to sustainability. This study examines New Zealand winegrowers in terms of their attitudes and behaviours towards wine tourism and sustainable wine production. A national survey was conducted at the end of 2015, which was the fourth such survey to be undertaken as part of a longitudinal study of wine tourism in New Zealand. This survey drew on issues of wine and biosecurity, climate change, and eco-labelling, as well as wine tourism. These issues were examined within the context of three key drivers of sustainability: the physical aspects of sustainable wine production, the internal drivers within wine businesses for the adoption of sustainable practices, and the external regulatory aspects that govern the adoption of sustainable wine production practices. The findings indicate that there were substantial concerns with the perceived value provided by both wine tourism and sustainable winegrowing practices. These concerns exist at both the firm level and with the governing bodies that are responsible for implementing sustainable winegrowing initiatives. Unless this perception of the value of sustainability within the New Zealand wine industry is altered in the future, it appears that there will continue to be an ongoing issue as to how sustainable winegrowing initiatives are implemented.
The role of charismatic mega-fauna in conservation has been well recognised. However, far less recognition has been given to the significance of charismatic mega-flora (trees and forests). This note examines the properties of charismatic and flagship species and identifies several categories of the physical properties and cultural attributes of trees and forests that contribute to their recognition as being extraordinary and therefore not only becoming markers for tourists, but also potential flagships for conservation.
This study provides insights for managers in the food retail sector, the horticultural industry, actors involved in community gardening and farmers’ markets. It proposes a model that investigates key factors determining US consumer preferences for growing fruit over buying it in pre-Covidian and Covidian times. For this purpose, an online survey with a sample of 383 US residents was conducted. Partial least squares structural equation modelling shows that subjective knowledge about fruit and the perceived impact of COVID-19 are the most important drivers of preferences for growing over buying in Covidian times. The impact of COVID-19 had no relevance for the pre-Covidian times. For both scenarios, only age and gender as socio-demographic factors were found to influence subjective knowledge and the perceived impact of COVID-19. Other sociodemographic factors were not found to have any impact.
Apple preferences of US consumers are widely explored. However, the key factors that drive the importance that US consumers place on apple attributes are rather unexplored. To fill this literature gap, an online survey with 383 US apple buyers was conducted. A two-step analysis consisting of descriptive statistics and partial least squares structural equation modelling indicates that subjective knowledge was the most important factor, determining both the discernment of buyers and attitudes towards US fruit growers. Objective knowledge and sociodemographic factors, other than education, were not found to have any impact. The discernment of a buyer and their ability to distinguish apple varieties had the greatest impact on the importance that US consumers placed on physical and commercial product attributes. It was also found that attitudes towards growers impacted on the importance which consumers place on both types of attributes. Given that consumer attitudes were shown to be a strong driver of their buying preferences, growers and grower associations should also consider highlighting the positive health and societal benefits that their products provide.
Mercury Free Microscopy (MFM) is a new movement that encourages microscope owners to choose modern mercury free light sources to replace more traditional mercury based arc lamps. Microscope performance is enhanced with new solid state technologies because they offer a more stable light intensity output and have a more uniform light output across the visible spectrum. Solid state sources not only eliminate mercury but also eliminate the cost of consumable bulbs (lifetime ∼200 hours), use less energy, reduce the instrument down time when bulbs fail and reduce the staff time required to replace and align bulbs. With lifetimes on the order of tens of thousands of hours, solid state replacements can pay for themselves over their lifetime with the omission of consumable, staff (no need to replace and align bulbs) and energy costs. Solid state sources are also sustainable and comply with institutional and government body mandates to reduce energy consumption, carbon footprints and hazardous waste. MFM can be used as a mechanism to access institutional financial resources for sustainable technology through a variety of stakeholders to defray the cost to microscope owners for the initial purchase of solid state sources or the replacement cost of mercury based sources. Core facility managers can take a lead in this area as "green" ambassadors for their institution by championing a local MFM program that will save their institution money and energy and eliminate mercury from the waste stream. Managers can leverage MFM to increase the visibility of their facility, their impact within the institution, and as a vital educational resource for scientific and administrative consultation.
